Probably with less reliable issues though
Probably true, though touch wood so far my McLaren has been great, only issue has been AC loss and both times due to corroded AC pipes (bad design) and both times warranty denied until I escalated ir directly to McLaren client services who then both times paid for the repairs, AC all good now.
In short I paid £4500 for two years extended warranty and under that warranty car has had:
- 2x new front dampers - £3000
- 2x new front bushes installed - £1000
- 2x AC Repairs - £1600
- Random trim stuck back down - £200
- Random rattle/clunk (loose bolt) - £200
All minor issues, I've done 8000 miles and four track days and all the issues have been resolved when dropping the car of for routine servicing, to be frank I am happy with it but even little niggles can add up value wise making the warranty really worth having, because should a big item fail like gearbox (10-20k) or engine let go (20-40k) the warranty really pays for itself. Though engine failures are very rare and gearbox failures even rarer, no worse than any other supercar brand anyway and at least the McLaren warranty covers a lot more than say Ferrari extended warranty and cost less too.
Porsche extended warranty covers the most and is also one of cheapest so anyone with a Porsche, it is worth every penny, about £800 per year on a 718 GT4 for example. Lamborghini is also good but problem with Lamborghini extended warranty is it does cost around 4-6k per year but generally covers everything, from my experience Ferrari extended warranty is the worse, won't cover dampers for example.
Been in McLaren world it does seem a bit hit and miss, one of the worse warranty offenders seems to be 720S, know a few people with big big miles on cars like 12C and 650S relatively trouble free just service items on the super series like accumulators which can be costly but a specialist like V or Thorney can upgrade those and then make them serviceable to reduce future cost.
