Bye Bye Game!

Most of the duplication is down to two reasons:

1. As mentioned the acquisition of Gamestation and failure to rebrand/shut down/consolidate

2. Presense in covered shopping centre's has led to GAME opening additional stores within a short distance of thier traditional high street stores.

Real World Example: Crawley, West Sussex

County Mall - Small GAME Store

Shopping Precinct - Large GAME Store (Within 2 minute walk of County Mall store)

The Broadway - Medium sized GameStation store (within 5 minutes walk of Shopping Precinct GAME store)

Pretty much the same situation where I am.

Ironically, I found gamestation more interesting a lot of the time because of their retro stuff :p

Leicester was a particularly bad case:
Big store in the mall
Concession in Debenhams in same mall, just opposite
Small store in outside precinct
Gamestation further up precinct.

That's 4 stores within 0.5 mile of each other when 1 big store could have done the same numbers at much lower cost. All four could have been amalgamated six months ago into the old Virgin premises and would have surely been profitable.

The suits at that company have much to answer for with such bonkers strategy and as usual, it will be the floor staff paying the price...

Not really bothered about Game/Gamestation hardly ever bought from them as they were alway more expensive than the rest.

However I still miss Special Reserve, Now there was a proper computer/games shop......

My local Gamestation was still open this morning but they don't seem to bother opening the shutters nowadays, probably trying to hide the stock problems.

Is the Virgin store in The shires shut now?

What, if anything has gone there now?

Indeed, made me laugh whenever I was in the City Centre.

Virgin went ~ages ago, it became Zavvi. Zavvi was pretty much the same as Virgin and was ~quite good, then it closed and now there is nothing.

The rumour is that they had pretty big fines for ending long term leases early which is why they seemed to not close many or any stores when it became clear they were running up massive debts. In hindsight it would have been better to cut the stores 6 months ago and run the lease holders round in circles for the fines than compound thier debts.

I'd love to know the horrific loss they are making on thier brand new flagship store in Westfield at Stratford City a store that size is probably £500,000 a year

Best of luck to those who have lost thier jobs though

well looking at the list of store closures looks like both the local Gamestation and GAME survived near me (Redditch). So far anyway.

I was talking to the guys in GameStation a few weeks and ago and they said that they and the GAME near by are always in the weekly top 5 top-performing UK stores, so I guess that is why they are still going - for now.

Hope they stay - well one at least.

Do you know that Electronics Boutique bought game out years ago and re-branded as Game, Which is the actual reason most cities have two Game stores and not because they needed one in the shopping centres.

I love it when a plan comes together...RBS in plans to buy Game and the government in plans to sell off a large stake in RBS at a huge loss to Abu Dhabi.....this is just lolworthy if it wasn't so silly!
