From reading posts here I've managed to put this list together

I7 4790k 4.00ghz (lga1150) - 259.99
Msi radeon r9 290x lightening edition 4096mb - 239.99
Gigabyte z97x-sli 92.99
Samsung 250gb 850 evo SSD 109.99
Team group vulcan red 8gb (2x4gb) ddr3 2400mhz 65.99
Seagate barracuda 2tb 7200rpm sata 64mb cache hdd 64.99
Antec high current gamer 620w 80plus bronze psu 64.99
Lg 24x dvd+-rw sata rewriter black 13.99
Raijintek aidos direct contact cpu cooler 15
Aerocool ds200 black edition 75
Window panel 20

This just breaks 1000, but falls under with the £30 Intel gigabyte discount.

What are people's opinions?

My key worries were
is the 17 worth it?
Should I go with the amd 290x lightning or gtx 970... I was hoping someone could help me choose a decent 970 card.

Also I was thinking of hooking up a HD lcd TV to this.. Is that really bad?

The TV will likely have quite bad input lag so won't be great, but still useable :)

I'd go for something like this instead;

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£15 Saving + Gigabyte Free Upgrade + £30 Intel Cashback ** £387.98
1 x GALAX GeForce GTX 970 EX OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (97NQH6DNB4UX) £263.99
1 x SK Hynix 256GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS256G32MNB-2201A) £84.98
1 x BitFenix Ronin Tower Case - Black £69.95
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) HDD £64.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/8) £62.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £59.99
1 x Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm £19.99
Total : £1,029.86 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Better mobo, arguably better PSU and GPU, slightly cheaper RAM, cheaper SSD, cheaper case (though this is subjective) and more cashback (£30) :) http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18637856

I'd take the 970 as it is newer technology, will run cooler + quieter and more :)

The 290X is faster, overclock like a beast, 3 free games.

I would take it over a cheap GTX970 all day long.

Also GTX970 run quieter? have you seen the cooler on the MSI? or read reviews?

Better PSU? not sure about that;)

I did say *arguably* about the PSU, the antec is modular though so it's a plus point for that, but you do get free shipping with the SF one :D

Didn't think of the games though with the 290X, excellent point there

Who cares about free shipping when the MSI 290X is cheaper than the GTX970 by a value greater than the shipping anyway? :D

Your lack of hardware knowledge is showing again;)

The few reviews I had read showed the 970 marginally better with cooler /quieter performance... Though this wasn't compared against the lighting 290x

So as I see it the 970 I could afford wouldn't really be as good as the 290x?

No way its better, that MSI is a 290X and is a beast of a card. clocks extremely extremely well (dual BIOS with LN2 mode that removes all the limits), hand picked core I think too.

£239 for it and 4 free games (gold ticket = 3 games and that Civilization game)

Ah each build option seems to be better than the last.. By the looks of it Lee had dropped from 2tb to 1tb...that's the only downgrade, am I right

I think I'm going to stick with the aericool ds200 case, I like the sound of leather on the outside and the sleek look. The temperature reading and controls on top are cool too.

I'm not missing something am I? As long as it fits the case isn't a huge deal?

I dont think number of heatpipes has much baring, the Rajintek Themis has just 3 for example.
So, why is there an extra heat pipe on the Themis EVO? I guess they missed a trick when they could have used only 3 heat pipes instead of 4 while getting the same results!

Jesting aside, okay, heat pipes are not the be all and end all of heatsinks.

It's still a weak heasink though, for the money. I'm sure it was chosen because the pure is out of stock ;)

Do you think it is the correct choice? I know we are slipping hairs, but.

Its not a wrong choice.

There are lots of heatsinks between £20-30 that are all good choices.

Also what if the diameter of the heatspipes are the same as or bigger than one with more heatpipes?

It is a good Heatsink for the money. The Avexir Ram has tall Heatspreaders so you are somewhat restricted with air cooler choice, as most will cover at least one ram slot.

Anyway the Eco gets a good review - http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6659/alpenfoehn-brocken-eco-cpu-cooler-review/index6.html
