Cable braiding tutorial

Derek, I've braided one of those myself.

The 24 pin is easy for male, female, you might need a bit more force on the cable.

kd

I tried forcing it a bit more tonight and ended up with a couple of cuts on my thumb from where the 4 broke away from the other 20 connection

Looked in my current pc cos i thought i had another extension cable to see if it was any easier but sadly I managed to stretch the psu cable to the mobo. I nabbed the 8 pin psu extension cable and that one seems fine for removing the pins so I'll work on that one when my heatshrink arrives.

Ouch! Maybe I should add a warning to the OP, braiding cables may lead to cut sliced worn sore and blistered fingers haha. TBH though it was one of those extensions I used and is the blue/white braided 24 pin in the OP. I don't remember any trouble with removing any of the pins though, maybe they have changed design slightly or something.

@ Majnu: I know somewhere in the UK that stokes the Pulse modding tools and phobya ones also though I don't know good they are as never used them. Unfortunately though they are a competitor of OCUK so I can't name them :(

thanks I'll try and google phobya and see what I come up with, otherwise I may have to order it along with my braids from the german site linked in post #100.

Thanks for the guide too.

Looks like an interesting thing to do. From the pictures I've seen it looks really good when you do it all nicely. Although I know that if I attempt to do it, it'll go completely wrong but may try it with just some extra cables first to see how it goes.

how many metres of sleeving is generally needed to do a PSU and case cables?

Will 10metres be enough?

You'll probably need more than 10m. The easiest way to do it to be honest is look at your PSU specs. Most manufacturers have cable specs on their website for the product. Alternatively it tends to be on the box.

Then it's just a simple case of working out what cables you want sleeved, and doing the maths...

Example: 24 pin cable, say your cables are 60cm.
You're going to need 24x60cm = 1440cm or 14.4m

I think I'm exaggerating the actual lengths, but you get the point.

To anybody reading the thread, if you're going with a single colour. So like all blue, or all red or something. So long as you are ok with the cables at the bottom of your case not necessarily being braided, it's worth looking at the BitFenix extension cables. Cost tends to be about the same anyway in the end.

Nils only sells stuff between certain hours now because of various time constraints. The International site does give times, and it does tend to be open then. So double check and just try again.

As for seeing products, you can preview the products on the German site to decide what you want first.

You'll probably have to rely on Chrome or something to translate, but yeah.

I'm having trouble registering to the EU store of that site so I can't buy any cables yet. Also I was told on overclock.net to get 80metres to do a full PSU. If that's the case then it will cost a lot of money to do.

This was a guide to what individual cable lengths I was told to use are:

Yeah, you need quite a bit... Buying pre-cabled bitfenix works out to about £100 for a full set, about the same for a braid yourself. You can buy fewer bitfenix though and not do a whole set.

I'm going to see what other sellers have. It will cost over £100 and I wasn't expecting it to cost that much tbh.

I think I'm going to go down the paracord route, as it won't cost and arm and a legg and it looks just as good as braided sleeving. I just need to find some sky blue paracord and the right thickness as shown on the first page.

Cable braid guide as promised.

Not going to take credit for this, but can't remember whee I got it from.

There is some flex in sizes but these I feel are a good benchmark

Individual Wires - 3mm or 4mm
SATA Power Cable - 6mm or 3/4mm for single wires
SATA Data Cable - 6mm (Make sure it's expandable to 12mm or if you have 10mm you can try but it might be a tight fit.)
24 Pin MB ATX Connector -12 mm or 3/4mm for single wires
6 Pin PCI Express Cable - 6mm or 3/4mm for single wires
8 Pin PCI Express Cable - 6mm or 3/4mm for single wires
4 Pin For CPU - 6mm or 3mm/4mm for single wires
8 Pin For CPU - 6mm or 3mm/4mm for single wires
4 Pin Molex Power Cables - 8mm or 3/4mm for single wires
3 Pin Molex / Fan Power Cables - 5mm/4mm/3mm

the seller cancelled my lamptron mod tool order as he had no stock, so which tool will remove the pins from fans? I'm looking to order by lunch time so any quick replies would be appreciated. :)

Only just seen this, anything really will remove the pins on fans from the plug. Even fan I have done, you just need something small enough to apply some light pressue to the metal bit visible which will compress the metal fitting and with a little pull you can remove the pin. This way obviously onle removes one wire/pin at a time whereas the tool would allow you to remove them all in one go.
