Cable braiding tutorial

Thanks for the excellent guide!

I've just finished my first ever attempt of braiding :)

I went with 550 paracord, I think it looks so much nicer than other cable braid material.

I also used the left over innards of the paracord to tie the cables together.

and from the back.

Its by no means perfect but I'm pretty happy for a first attempt.

For the next ones I've made a block of wood which i've drilled a hole in to a set depth, now i can inset the heat shrink into the hole and cut it off to an exact length so hopefully they will all be the same.

I've had to order some smaller heat shrink though as the cables on my pci-e extensions are a lot smaller and the 5mm heat shrink wont shrink down enough to get a good hold.

To any one wanting to try this make sure you have a lot of spare time on your hands and a lot of patience.
This one cable took me all evening to do. A lot of time was wasted on me doing things wrong but once you know all the little pit falls it becomes faster and faster to finish. hopefully the next ones will be a lot quicker.

Roll on the 24pin! :)

Quick question guys
I am ok sleeving (done it in the past in my prodigy)
But want to try sleeving/braiding without using heatshrink, i know i have to cut the ends of the cable, but what metal pins do i need to retach to the cable for it to go into say the 24pin atx, 8pin eps, or 6/8 pin pcie cable?

morning :)
Are you thinking of snipping the ends of, getting new connectors, sleeving then re-crimping the connectors back on?
Good luck with that, the results can be pretty epic!!

Not 100% sure if OCUK do the connectors you need, so i would suggest dropping them a line to ask, failing that - Google knows everything, search for exactly what you need.
EG - in google i put - 24 pin ATX pins, loads of results come up :)

you speaking to me? if so, yeah noticed that
looked into it a bit further, looks a tad scary

think ill order some sleeve and heatshrink from mdpc and take it from there :)

Well finally got round to my iron man build tonight
Will start the sleeving/braiding tomorrow - been waiting on the mdpc gold sleeve to arrive.
It came today, well impressed with the quality of it

when lifting the tabs on the pins, I aint got the steadiest of hands and when trying to do something my hand tends to shake and im impatient as hell....so ended up with finger tips like sive.

started again though as my cables were just sitting there staring at me managed to do a few of them ive done a blue white blue white pattern. It looks okay but think i should have gone with the pattern you have looks a lot better.

will post a few pictures once my mates done borrowing the missus camera.

yeah the little fiddly bits can be annoying. Keep at it though.
Stick some tunes on and take your time, no need to rush it.

After you've done a few you get the knack and your'll soon start to crash them out.

The best way i found to work with Braiding is some tunes and a 4 pack of beer.
Seriously, take your time on the first one or two cables - If anything, find some scrap wiring with a similar width (old PSU or the Molex extensions) and have a few plays at that first.
A staple, needle nose pliers and patience are the key things here :) (beer obviously tops that on my list!!)

I have been looking at the OC store and don't see the tool to remove the connectors, does anyone know if they stock them, and if not what are they called so I can try elsewhere.

I am quite interested in the paracord look.
