Hi

In the future I might run a network cable from my router to xbox series x upstairs, which is currently on wifi, which is fine to be fair but would be nice to see the difference hard connection would make on my future 1gb fttp connection.

If I can do this would connecting a long length of cat 6 cable to my switch downstairs near to the router and then running it under the floorboards/walls and straight into my series x work, also what is the maximum length for cat 6, as a guess I would say from switch to xbox its about 15-20 metres.

I guess this is the messy workaround as opposed to installing ethernet ports onto the walls, are the wall ports needed or is that just for tidiness?

CAT6 is rated to 1Gbps up to 100m and 37-55m at 10Gbps so your distance is fine.

If you're happy with the cable going straight into the device then don't worry about it. Might look cleaner if you chased a port into the wall, but if it's already out of the way I wouldn't worry about it myself.
I have my PC directly connected via a 20m cable tucked around the room and through walls. Does what I need!

Fantastic, thanks. Might give it a go when I have some time, just a case of the messy part of lifting some floorboards!

Spend the extra few pennies and do proper ethernet sockets at each end rather than just putting crimp connector ends on, much nicer and much less likely to damage the cable by accident if its trunked/chased properly.

I need to measure but I'm just going to get some lengths of cat6 already made with connectors, most likely about 25m metre runs, not bothered about sockets as Ive found a better run for the cables since, I will get an 8 port switch, since my current one is only 5 sockets, and run 3 lengths of cat 6 from that up a chimney shaft that ends in the loft as the chimney was removed years ago then down into an airing cupboard that already has cabling running through it from the loft. so no need to lift any floorboards up.
Thats the plan anyway
