Cabriolet for the summer....

^ Fair amount of win. Not sure how I feel about one of those without a roof, but it certainly meets the requirements!

4 seat convertible? Anyone who sits in the back will look like a dictator :/

Pretty sure my 2 year old doesn't look like a dictator in the back of my 4 seat convertible :p

Unfortunately needs must, i assume OP is in the same position.

a BMW 650i is in budget, for some V8 fun in one of the best looking cars BMW have made for a good while.

OR a MUSTANG V8 Powwwwaaarrrrrr

I'd probably pick the Mustang, cause I don't care about the willy waggling about having a premium badge, I'd have an iconic muscle car.

Which, if its a convertible, will almost certainly end up with 2 seats not 4 (I'm pretending the seats in something like a 911 don't exist, as they are for dogs, not people :p).

Small people fit, people of such stature as InvaderGIR and NickXX

Awesome replies folks :)

A little context.... the 4 seat thing is partly 2 reason. #1 on rare occassions id like to get my family in which is wife + 2 kids under 10. #2 the back seats no matter how small provide a bit of storage and i'm not sure a "proper" 2 seat convertible will be just big enough generally. Id like to chuck a mountain bike on the back seats (in a bike bag lol). In addition Id probably look silly driving a SLK, F-Type size car I think. Something a little bigger would probably suit me better - but not massive lol. The other thing is ill be selling the wifes car to free up the drive space for this car; so she will go from a juke dig-t to a 15 plate land rover discovery hse. This might be the biggest issue lol as shes a bit nervous given the hugeness.

Some feedback on the suggestions....

M3 Convertible - Id assume a 435i would be more suitable which nobody has suggested. Im just not sure I like the 4 series shape. A couple of guys at the office have 420d coupes and im not sure its special enough even if its fast.

F-Type - Looks like I was wrong on price, but there cant be many in my budget which puts me off. Either will be high miles or poverty spec if they are bottom of the market. The depreciation comment was because they are still new with little history so the resale could be bad or good. Its also a 2 seater so kinda disadvantaged to begin with

640i - Ill look into these a bit more and get a drive in one. Growing on me from what ive read. Hoping its sporty rather than fast barge.

Maserati Grancabrio - out of budget, and if i was spending that id just buy a 991.

RS5 - Maybe, but beyond the flared arches which I like, then not sure how much better it is than a S5 which Ive owned previously and drove a cab this week.

S5 - Quick, but not fast. Noise was OK. Could be a contender with a stage 1 remap to 400bhp and exhaust maybe.....

Mustang - Sorry dont like the interior. Might be different with the new one, but not currently. Ive owned a v8 coupe S5 previously so not different enough.

Stuff ive looked at online but nobody mentioned i think.

E-Class 400 - A friend has a e220d cab and its OK. Not sure what a e400 is like. Im assuming it will be similar to S5.

Boxster - concerned it will be too small. Will drive one.

911 (997.1?) - concerned its too old. Will drive one anyhow. Maybe I just need to man up and find more cash lol for a 997.2 or 991.

Merc SL - Same concerns as 640i. Fast barge? its huge for only 2 seats in addition.

Anything else out there?

Boxster - awesome value for money arguably better than a 911 in many ways for a pure driving experience, especially vs the convertible 911 at this price. However, it is a 2 seat roadster and just isn't the same league looks and road presence wise imo.

997.1 - good value at the moment to get yourself into a 911. Horror stories about the engine are valid (albeit rare), but can be avoided with an inspection of cylinder bores and avoiding the earlier (pre 2006) cars helps with IMS and RMS issues to some extent. Fabulous looking cars still and will continue to age well in the right colour/wheel combo. I can't see the problem with the age of the car in question has been well maintained. Still quite a few low mileage cars about. The 997.2 is better, but still commanding a decent premium. They're not without their problems also engine wise.
