Calibra - Steer Clear?

Garages in swindon tend to be ridiculously overpriced aswell.

Any suggestions are welcomed!
Get a mate who knows about cars and either go to your local auction or buy privately. Dealer markups at this end of the market are a significant portion of the car's value. Read the sticky about buying.

Really? well i can stretch to 2500 for the right car. What engine/year would you reccomend for the money?

£2500? Take your pick from the range! - You'd even find an early M3 although it'll be a complete shed for that money!

Personally, I'd go for a late model 323i / 325i although the 318iS offers similar performance without the nose heavy feel of the 6 cylnder cars....

General condition & service history should concern you more than age, I'd rather pay more for an A1 condition earlier car than a tattier later one.

Do not be put off by mileage. ;)

I am not overly hooked on the idea of an e36, i am likely to go down the hatchback route, but it seems my budget is seemingly "no mans land" for any type of car.. i'm beggining to get frustrated with the inability to find a decent car for my money. Trawling autotrader for hours seems to bring up bog standard clios/saxos/106s, just wondering whether an increase in budget would be a good idea. i have plenty of spare income to buy a car with but thought this would get me something nice enough! apparently not!

As you have found, this is no mans land budget. Its not enough to get anything really nice, and its too much for a cheap car.

I'd spend approx a grand on something which has depreciated loads, and just chuck that around for a while.

Yeah the budget really is a bit awkward. I bet you could get a nice 306/Xsara, a saxo vts (although be ready for the painful interior!) and other similiar 98-00/01 family hatches. Focus' at this money tend to be dogs.

My money would be on hunting down a mondeo, or spending 1500 on an omega elite :p .

800k for a veyron last time i checked. Your nearly there.

3.5k upwards imo. Get a 156 w00tles.

3.5k is achievable, but i need to get to work every morning so an alfa prob isnt viable :p

406, Mondeo, Laguna, E36, Primera, Xantia, Vectra

All cars which will be perfectly good for £1000 - £2000

Id have the E36, reliable, hendle excellently, excellent range of engines.

Id be suspicious of the mileage, and im not sure i'd pick the 320i (its a 6pot, you may as well get a bigger 6pot, or go for a 4)

Id also want a better spec, there isnt really any point in going for low spec models, it doesnt affect the price much. :)

That mileage is almost impossible to believe. And do you really wanna spend that sort of money on a 16 year old car anyway :)

(I actually saw an H reg Fiesta with genuine 29k recently but for that sort of car, it's more believable.)

Pah you had a fiat all this time, alfa's are just fiat's with stick on tat  .

I don't think the unreliable thing with alfa's is as potent as it used to be. But 3.5k opens up doors to newer higher spec 'warm' hatches and even mk1 172's.

Yeah. I have got to meet clients in my car, so a ropey beemer prob isnt the road to go down. 172's will cane me on insurance. I need a car this weekend!

Well don't rush into getting something if you're not sure as you might well regret it later. You are still at a very early stage of buying a car, as you don't know what model you want yet. When you do, then you will need to take time to find a good one for the right price, rather than just the first one you see in your price range.

Yeah, i cant settle on a car, seeing as cars in this budget are not consistent its not easy to reserve yourself to one model. At the moment i get a lift to work, on monday i no longer get a lift to work. You get the idea :p
