Call to ban 'human cockfighting'

As long as its regulated and the competitors are insured properly for private treatment (so as not to impact on the resources of the NHS - Im probably opening a big old can 'o' worms with that because I admit I mountain bike.) I have no problem with it.

Its not greatly different or probably much more dangerous than boxing or some martial arts nor does it bring harm to any one involuntarily.

Illegalising it would just push it underground anyway and unnessecarily make criminals out of people who want to pursue a sport.

I have never seen a cage fight, but the idea of it doesn't sit very comfortably with me. I can understand things like Judo, Karate etc being seen as sports because there are set moves, strict rules and seems to be a great deal of skill involved. My understanding of cage fighting is that anything goes, with the exception of one or two things like eye gouging. I know that nobody is being forced to cage fight, but I still don't like the idea of two human beings knocking lumps out of each other in what seems to be little more than a street fight.

if they could bring some cold hard facts to the table regarding it being so bad, then people who really care, would listen.

offers no protection?
the smaller gloves may mean more cuts and blood, but those cuts generally dont even need stitches iirc. where as in boxing, the cuts and the lumps need some serious work on them.

there are more rules to cage fighting than there are to boxing, there are plenty of doctors around the ring including those who can call a stop to the fight on medical grounds (just like boxing).

I can understand where the doctor's are coming from but it's not like anyone is forced to cage fight. Those who wish to do so will understand the risks more than anyone and it should be entirely their choice whether or not they participate.

they are protected. infact, i am sure that ref's are stopping fights a lot quicker in recent events.

It's all solely because it's within a cage, which is a complete and utter load of crap. You don't hear people harping on about Kickboxing, or indeed Boxing.

How many career/life threatening injuries have there been while the UFC has been active? None, as far as I know.

Sure there are injuries, but there are in any sport. This lot need to wind their necks in and shut their beaks.

These people do my nut in, ban football, ban f1, ban horse riding, ban boxing, ban ban ban, shut it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mma is as safe, if not safer, than a lot of sports, strictly monitored, doctors all over the place and no more dangerous than boxing in my book.

The referee's come diving in as soon as someone looks in real trouble, the fighters health is the number one priority.

Long live mma.

They do harp on about banning boxing but its only ever after something serious happens every few years (law of averages IMHO) and the media only show it for a day or so. Nothing to worry about gents ;) :D

Well if you really want to get a good insight into the "behind the scenes" life of a MMA fighter i highly recommend "The Smashing Machine: Mark Kerr", its a biographical film which tracks his short MMA career in pride, including his overdose, his wins and his losses. It even has 5 secs of him smashing Paul Varelans (of UFC fame) too if you look hard enough at the start! Also has mark coleman at home feeding his babies from a bottle too which was quite an amusing scene really.

but yea ultimately they are just guys who want to earn a living, used to fight when they were younger (wrestlers, or street brawlers etc).
