Do anyone's parents do this? Its mainly my mum as my dad only calls when something is needed or he needs to tell me something.

I think its just women in general but I find it so annoying. Don't get me wrong, I love my mum but when she calls and I ask her if something is up and she says "no, just calling for a chat" then gets mad it really annoys me.

If you are not the same as me, what do you chat about??
To the women - What do you chat about to other women
I generally like my phone calls to be factual, like "where are you, i'll be there in 10 mins" done

This must go for single men, men with girlfriends and married men.

I started this thread as mum just called, got irate when I asked her what she wanted to chat about, then said she would call back when im not in a mood - Which im not

I hate phone calls.

I've happily not spoken to my parents for ages and never had the need to call every day to tell them the same boring routine of nothingness i hadn't done. I don't know if it's just me, or if that is a really harsh way of "being" but I 'spose I simply just can't be bothered!

I did feel bad after a while and realise they like to know i'm safe etc, it's nice to catch up after a period of time but I honestly don't understand how people hold conversation especially with parents for hours every day on the phone.

you sound lovely and sociable

I am - Talk to people at work all the time, talk to random people at the gym / where I train etc. Talk to my parents a lot when I go home and friends I haven't see... I just don't see how people have conversations for hours every day with each other. They must talk about what they read in Hello magazine or something

Start buying hello magazine?

I hate phone calls that aren't just to the point. A large part of my job is in a call centre and the people who go through their entire story instead of just telling me what I need to know does my head in.

Have an excellent relationship with my mother now that I've moved out. Sod talking to her for more than 30mins a week though.

My sister and mother are on the phone every night. She doesnt ring me anymore i hate been on the phone anyway rather just text or speak face to face so told her dont bother ringing unless its important.

Every now and again I'll have a phone conversation with my parents just to catch up.

With friends however - as you say it is either to organise plans.

With women when it's like 'that' - it's to butter them up and reel them in! ;p

When I was living away from home my mum would phone every 1-2 weeks or so just for a chat or I'd phone at some point, didn't have a problem with it - good to keep in touch - though it would get tedious if she was calling up every day or every other day.

I speak to my Mum a few times a week and we just catch up really. She fills me in on what has been happening at home with her and my Dad and how life is back in the village where I grew up. I tell her about work and if anything is happening within my social circle and so on.

However she became a bit of a nightmare when she first learned how to text. I'd get an initial text and if I didn't reply within a few minutes she would text again asking if I was ok. I had to sort that one out pretty sharpish before she drove me nuts. :D

I'm pretty much the same as you OP. I can't see the point in talking to my parents more than once a week, and I rarely even do that, it's more like once every 3 weeks lol.

I have a male friend that calls me up from time to time for a chat...

It wouldnt be so bad but he seems to phone with nothing in mind to talk about, so its a super awkward conversation.

Example:

Me: Hey whats up?

Him: Oh nothing just called for a chat.

Me: Ah right ok.

Him: *silence*

Me: Okaaaay, so what have you been up to?

Him: Not much.

Me: .....

This will go on for about 20 minutes until I make up an excuse to hang up.

I think since the phone came along, people find a reason to talk when there really is none.

Calling for no reason is entirely pointless in my opinion
