Calling for 'a chat'

OP, i think you hit the nail with your first line. It's not people, or even parents, it's women.

A phone call should rarely last more than a minute.

I see my parents every day because me and my brother work for their neighbors. He still lives with them but I always pop in to say hi, sometimes I have dinner there.

People think it's weird I see them every day but we have a great relationship. My usual greeting to my mom in the afternoon is 'afternoon ****head', I always get a funny retort. Been a ritual for several years now. :D

I generally meet up for a chat unless the person is far away, in which case I might call them if I feel like talking to them.

I don't do texting for messaging or any of that rubbish.

I see my parents every week so no on that front, I imagine if they lived far away it would be different.

A phone call should rarely last more than a minute.
The conversation of "What do you reckon Nigellas nipples are like" takes more than a minute man.

I have a male friend that calls me up from time to time for a chat...

It wouldnt be so bad but he seems to phone with nothing in mind to talk about, so its a super awkward conversation.

Example:

Me: Hey whats up?

Him: Oh nothing just called for a chat.

Me: Ah right ok.

Him: *silence*

Me: Okaaaay, so what have you been up to?

Him: Not much.

Me: .....

This will go on for about 20 minutes until I make up an excuse to hang up.

He wants the D bro.

I talk to my parents because I seen what my dad was like when his father died, I can tell when he misses me, when he misses the little boys he had to look after. I guess he doesn't want me to go through missing him, the way he misses his dad.

He always tells me "I wish I could ask my dad for advice, sometimes I wish I had his hindsight because I have nobody for advice"

Some times I think back and wish I was a kid all over again for him
