Calling Golf owners...

Thats a very good price... these cars are pretty rare... especially with low mileage for its year. Thats a good price... the GT TDI's are going for a little less... I was also recommend looking at a Anniversary gold 1.8T as they will hold their value loads more and they look much better :D

Half the country seems to think they are amazing ultra reliable super-duper prestigious wonder hatchbacks.

my r32 has done 103 thousand miles without any major work, i think thats pretty reliable to me! ;)

Wow 103 is pretty high... you will start to get problems soon enough mate... trust me :D

not a chance ;) she gets stronger by the mile. not worse. I have all the equipment i need to make sure she stays running as good as she is :D

there are guys in germany and the US just installing turbo's at 100k :D

LOL... nice... in that case... good luck... but the amount of Audi's/Golf's I've seen start having problems after about 120k... but yours might be ok :P

Had a run in it this morning. Everything was perfect, but automatics are just not for me :| Back to the drawing board, nngh!

1 year ago a friend of mine spent 11k on a 53reg TDI golf 150. When I heard I said big wtf, what a rip off!
he could have got a newer, lower mileage, 1.8T cupra for that...

I want to know why [TW]Fox hates the golf so much?

I believe I covered that above?

The rest are overpriced for a reason, and no its down to them being prestigious or thinking they have a posh badge its the simple fact that they are good reliable cars

They are no more reliable than most other half decent cars. Wayn0r appears to think 103k miles without major work is some sort of VAGtastic achievement. So what? I've got a Mondeo parked outside with near 150k without major work, thats what decent modern cars can do these days.

but recommening a ford over one of these for similar money is just silly.

Why? The ST220 is better than the car in the OP in almost every conceivable way.

Saying that, i think bmw are the most over-rated/priced cars on the market considering what mercedes & audi have to offer for similar price tags ;)

Generaly speaking, the equivilent Audi tends to cost a few hundred quid more than the equivilent BMW. Please try and add some substance to your points :)

I had a 2003 V5 for the last couple of years, it was just sold to one of my friends. It’s a nice enough car but it would drink petrol at a shocking rate. its quite quick but nothing amazing.

It was relatively reliable other than having to replace the gear box at 3 500 pounds.

Which Golfs have you driven Fox? How did they compare to the Focus' that you've driven?

2.0 8v GTI. It was better built, it wasn't as sharp, and it was slow (But I appreciate the slowness is unique to the 2.0 8v and wont be present in the better models).

you just said earlier that they are unreliable? on what basis are they unreliable ?

I don't recall saying in this thread that they were unreliable. Perhaps you'd like to point it out to me.

I said everyone thinks they are some sort of amazingly uber reliable car - ie, that they are leagues ahead of the competition helped by VW's arrogant 'If only everything in life...' ad campaign a few years back. People then pay higher prices becuase they perceive it to be worth it even though a Golf is no more reliable than a Focus.

its called good business and marketing, obviously it works as you can see by the residual values of VW's ;) We have been here before fox, i dont want to get into another "Golfs" suck thread, because we all knowwwwww

R32 > you :D
