If you've setup your NAS to be accessible on the internet, have you used HTTPS and did you buy an SSL certificate?

If not, what other connection types would you suggest? FTP? SFTP?

When I used mine I just generated my own certs. I generate all my own certs. The only downside is they're not "recognised" as legit by browsers. Mozilla and EFF are planning a free SSL service though I think.

Cheers!

Another note....I've tried to make it accessible on the internet but the address keeps taking me to my router page

HAve you given the NAS a static IP and done all the port forwarding?

Yeah - static IP has been provided, and confirmed, and the port forwarding has been done via the router interface as the DSM seemed to time out or fail to make the changes on the router.

Are you testing it while still on the LAN or from an external source ? ( from the LAN, you will still end up at your routers page - try it externally, and as long as the NAT is in place correctly, should work fine )

ahh, thanks will give it a try from my phone

however, DSM has a tool which allows you to check the connectivity from the OS, they' re failing.

are you accessing it http:// or https:// with the port as 5000 ?

Check under
Network
DSM settings

there is a flag to enable HTTPS access also - just in case your only trying http://ip:5000

I'm trying to use both to access it as I've enabled HTTPS but under the assumption HTTP would route to the other. HTTPS is using 5001.

I'm trying to connect using the DSN name. I've just deleted the router configs in DSM and creating them again to see if that makes a difference.

I would create the NAT's directly on your router rather than via DSM - it never seems to work that well when I've tried to use it. The time it takes for it to fail - you could have set it up manually.
What version of DSM are you running ?

Currently running 5.1

This is such a ball ache.....the guide made it look easy....didn't mention any of this crap!!

I would just create the NAT for what ever port you want to use to get to the DSM interface i.e 5000 on the router.
Take it your using that EZ-Internet app ?

Yeah and if it stands or "easy" it's been anything but to be honest. Should I disable HTTPS to get the basics up and running first?

Can do, its pretty easy to be honest as long as your comfortable with your router.

That EZ-Internet app is pants..

I've setup on the router the port forwarding for HTTP/HTTPS (not that I should have too) and the ports used for the UI (80 & 443)

Ever since the bitcoin mining malware I just use a vpn in my router instead, I rather have one potential security hole in the router than hoping all services I have running on the nas are not wide open to attack.

Granted the router is an asus one so i'm probably screwed anyways.

haha - I've given up trying to get it to work and just used the Quick Connect. Setting up a VPN is something I will definitely be trying to do for external access.
