An Intervalometer is the remote you're after and can be had second hand for around a fiver on ebay (bidding dependant). Another option might be to use the mobile app triggertrap and dongle which can be had for around £20 from the rainforest.
The thing I like about my Crumpler was the fact it can hold all the gear I need (body + 2 lenses) and fit into my Osprey walking bag while only taking up about a quarter of the space.
I took a bit of a gamble with it, although I'd suggest you try and find a local camera shop to go have a look at a few. Another option you have is to look if your hiking bag has a camera insert/module available.
