Camera Quick Straps

They are good. I can't say the PAP strap is worth the money, the actual strap whilst robust feels a bit cheap. Same goes for the clip. It makes it so easy to carry about a 1D MKIII with a 70-200 f2.8, clips straight to the tripod mount no worries with handling the camera and clashing with the strap. Not so much of a fan with a non tripod mount lens though.

- seller assures me its becauseof the volcanic ash, which could be true i guess...

well i did send something to scotland next day delivery yesterday and they said it may not get there next day because of the ash clouds lol.

Hmm, my D60 is very small and light for a DSLR, but once of these straps would be nice.

I'm tempted to go for the DIY option, where can I get the actual strap part? I already have a few 1/4" bolts which are the same thread as my tripod bolt I think...

i just used an old laptop strap and the neck strap off a lens case

I'm thinking of having a go at making something like this and will be heading to my local breakers yard to get my self some seat belts for the strap (I've not got any spare laptop or bag straps anywhere). I used a sealt belt in the past to make a guitar strap and it was perfect, extremely strong yet easy to sew.

I'm afraid I have neither of those, but I'll have a hunt around, I may have an old messenger bag somewhere....

Seatbelts are a good shout, you could even use the buckle to attach the camera too... I'll pick a couple up next time I'm at the scrapyard. :)

Yep, all the buckles and things are of good quality too,m so nabbing a few bits from a suitable donor car will give you enough bits to make the strap adjustable, and as you say should offer you good means of attaching camera.

I just need to find the time to get to a breakers yard now...

For those interested in the Quick Strap (R Strap copy), search for BondsCamera. They have "Make an Offer" on these at the moment and it seems £18-£20 gets you one. Which is more reasonable...

ive had it out and about with the 70-300mm on and it has been superb! no more neck/back ache and i can have the camera handy at all times without it getting in the way :D

I have also been about with my home made r strap at the Barcelona F1 with my EOS 7D with a 70-300 IS USM lens and i did not even notice the weight at all of the gear I was carrying around.

A damn dood idea that r strap !

The Luma Loop appears to be the current favourite on couple of other forums. Different shoulder pad design to combat slippage and also alternative connections to the camera.

i had a quick strap for my recent trip to venice, and wow - what a difference. I captured so many more shots which i wouldnt normally have due to having to lift the camera out of the bag, compose the **** etc. I just left it switched on, set to Ap mode, and made sure my shutter was always fast enough - lots of great pictures! Never looking back now - best camera accessory i've bought!

Was thinking of making one of these last night, few bits I have work, but won't be strong enough. Going to replace the ring with a stronger one, and then a metal clasp strap, or a carabiner :).

That's pretty nice though.

I've ordered a quick release plate off the bay and it's on it's way (should be here tomorrow or monday), so hopefully it'll be ready to go by tuesday if i can find the other stuff :)

Yeah, just need a longer bolt, and a better strap. I'm not sure whether to use a carabiner, or keep it quite compact, and just connect them via a small climbing sling or something. If i find a strap, and just connect straight to the loop...it'll cost me 21p for my R-Strap, heh.

Has everyone who's making their own strap read this from the PAP starp website:

Our Engineers Say... - Don't be tempted to engineer or adapt your own design - It seems that many people are opting for home made versions of the Pap Strap. This may well prove to be a false economy.

'At-home entrepreneurs' are supplying straps that attach to tripod quick release plates. It is our opinion that the D rings on this type of mount are not adequately secure. The rings found on the quick release plates are provided to tighten the tripod mount only and we would suggest that they are NOT SUITABLE OR STRONG ENOUGH to hang your camera from.

I already have a few spare tripod mount plates and I wondered about the strength of the little d-ring before I even read about it on the website. The d-rings are just made from pressed metal and probably only protrude into the tripod screw by a couple of mm at most. I could probably bend my d-rings just by over-tightening them.

I wouldn't trust hanging my camera and lens from a tripod mount plate d-ring.

Wasn't going to use the ring from the tripod, was just the only thing I could test to see what it was going to look like. Will be replacing with a Eye Bolt, if anything. And they are definitely strong enough, some can hold up to 70kg.

:( All well saying that because they want people to buy from them instead of making their own, but would they be strong enough?
Just got my quick release plate delivered this morning lol. :(
