Hi all,

Currently have a 400D, and am thinking of upgrading. My main issue is the quality of the preview screen. I have a friend with a sony slr, and that screen is beautiful.

Now im not sure how much I would get for my 400D + grip, but I can put about £300 on top of that. Im guessing maybe £200/£250 for the 400D and grip? Id keep my 17-85mm. Does that price sound about right?

Looking at TP, I could get a 500D / 550D / 50D. How do they compare?

Does the 400D even have a preview screen? If so, any particular reason for using the screen over the eyepiece? If it's just a screen for viewing settings and reviewing pictures then i really don't think it's that important to be honest, each to their own...

But yeah, £200 and up sounds about right.

It doesnt have live view, but you can view the pictures on it like all? dslrs

Whats the screen like on the 40d?

excellent. the 40D screen is a great jump from the 400D

It's larger on the 40D but has the same resolution and poorer viewing angles IIRC?

Wasn't until the 500D/50D that they improved them.

The 40D is probably the best value for money Canon DSLR available. It's my back-up body and I wouldn't change it.
While out photographing yesterday I got into conversation with a couple out doing the same and I looked at the screen on her 50D. Very vibrant colours and crystal clear compared with the 40D.

The 50D is definitely on the top end of my budget. Think I will take a look at a 500D first.

Just remember that a nice screen is a great tool but it should only really be use to check exposure and composition.

A few friends of mine who borrowed my 5DM2 often comment on how the picture looks sharp on the LCD but when uploaded to the PC, its actually out of focus.

+1

That 30mb Raw file might be nicely compressed on a 3" screen, but when uploaded onto a correctly calibrated PC screen. It can look a lot different!

I seem to remember reading that the review images are jpeg and are therefore sharpened to some degree but if your friends were shooting in raw then that could explain it.

i still think the 40D is the best value upgrade cost vs quality

unless your going to jump to something like a 5D

What would be the equivalent nikon upgrade?

I've currently got a 400D and 17-85mm

Im thinking of these prices for my current kit

400D body - £180
OEM grip - £60
17-85mm - £170

Sound about right?

Ok sold my 400D. Keeping the lens.

So the question is....I dont think im going to go for the 40D, so do I go for the 50D or the 550D? I had to grip my 400D for it to be comfortable, so I guess the 550D would be the same. How would the 50D compare in size to the gripped 400D?

Can't remember exactly how the 400D compares size-wise to the 1000D but think they were similar.

I went from a gripped 1000D to a 50D (still gripped) but whereas with the 1000D my little finger still touches the bottom of the grip and it's just about comfortable, the 50D just about accommodates my whole hand without the grip comfortably, and then with the grip it's very comfortable (albeit a bit heavier than the old combo).

2 seconds and I'll grab a pic for you.

(scuse the phone pics and the fact I somehow managed to resize differently lol)

Just to note - the grip on the 50D has a hand strap on it so it propped up a little bit more on the side closest to the 1000D, only a few mm though.

Nice one thanks. Arghh Im now considering a lighting setup and sticking with the 400D. Although I dont have space to set up the lighting and a background at home so would be hiring a studio which tend to have flash setups available anyway I think. Really don't know what to do. Im still a novice so not sure whether the jump to the 50D/550D would be a bit lost on me.

Im more in to my portraits and glamour photography, never really do landscapes or sports.

What about a used 5d mk1 going for around $900 according to some on POTN. If it's too much then a used 40D.
