Camera upgrade

Personally I'd go 50D for still images but 550D if you want to do video, don't know why but the 50D just seems "right" compared to a 550D when shooting stills.

Went for the 550D and cant help thinking I made the wrong decision. Not even picked it up yet tho lol

That 30mb Raw file might be nicely compressed on a 3" screen, but when uploaded onto a correctly calibrated PC screen. It can look a lot different!

agreed. i certainly wouldnt buy an SLR for its screen.

the screen on the 1Dmk3 for example, its good for checking exposure but thats about it. and thats on a camera that originally retailed at what £3000 or so? my point is never rely on it to check sharpness/focus, itll lull you into a false sense of security.

id concentrate on other pros/cons of an SLR when deciding on buying personally.

I have found the same, the RAW or Jpeg looks good on the 3'' screen and a lot different on my dell 24'' monitor !

As an owner of a 50d and a 40d ( 40d just died 120000 actuations) go for the 40d its better than 50d less noise I regret getting a 50d about to get 5d mk2.

Go for 40d ! It's fab
