Can 2 36gb raptor drives in raid 0 boot up windows as quick as this?

Actually, it looks like he has next to nothing installed, so I suppose it's possible with a stripped-down system. It's all the drivers and applications Windows loads that slows things down.

He's got Bios set not to show anything at all, and he's probably got a hefty CPU and lots of RAM. But yeah raided 36 raptors are pretty quick. And if it's a fresh install it'll all be nice and neat on the disks so it's seeking less. but before installing apps my ATA133 rig with A64 3000+ booted in about 12 seconds so yeah it's more than likely it's real, but bares no resemblance to real world usage.

Tho the boot screen is out of focus, this may be to deliberately hide an SCSI status splash. It wouldn't be hard to fake using 2 raided 36gig Suzzi drives.

That is pretty quick. Same as me only i got 1gig of lesser RAM and i'm at 2.6GHz @217.

Not, however as quick as this tech workstation. I've been racing it against the Vid. It's a 1.6Ghz 512MB Fujistu Primergy server with a 144GB Cheetah :D

Thats not astoundingly fast, but...:p Try as you might, you won't win. I have a HP ML350 sitting downstairs with server 2003 on it.
Dual 3.4 Xeon
4GB ECC RAM
6x144GB hotplug Cheetahs in raid 5.

Stopwatched it at 3.4s from post. Harsh piece of kit.

That's my vid :D

Berserker is right, it was made straight after installing windows, it slows down a fair bit after installing all your apps etc.

but it is genuine.

Plz could you tell me what stripe size you use for both your RAID Sets.

The 36 GB X 2

Then the 74 GB X 2

Many Thanks :)

Well, i want my Raptors to load windows fast as hell you see.

Then when im playing counter strike source and Battlefield 2 i want to be first into every map.

Last time i installed windows i set my stripe size to the biggest available lol, and everything loads slow.

I was told by someone that a stripe size of 32k is the best, is this true ?

as i said, as small as you can get it. The smaller it is the more work your controller has to do so there will be a peak, but in general the smallest stripe size would be fastest. the only true way is to play around and find which works best.

Yeah, that's slow.

I can get into windows and the splash bar hasnt even made it half way across. The secret? Disable winXP prefetch, have a well defragmented pc.

Hell, even my works pc (celeron with 512mb) loads up in only one bar. The prefetch is the key.

Mind you, raid 0 raptors 74gb and 2,800mhz of opteron power and 2gb of ram helps. :o

disabling prefetch doesn't demonstrate raw speed tho, as your reducing the load :p
That load will have to be processed at some point, which will mean everything else will slow down later.

Yeah, but the point was about getting into windows faster. Which disabling the prefetch does.

I wasnt refering to transfer rates.

However I do think prefetch is a complete waste - whats the point in prefetching data if its never going to be used. For example I turn the machine on to load my email, no point prefetching photoshop, or office etc... Thats just increasing the amount to load.

I use winxp prefetch control (google, simple download quicker than editing the registry).
