Can a cisgendered actor play a trans character?

LOL

When have you even answered 'cis male' on a form?

Never. But neither have I seen any options beyond Male/female.

For identifying gender, in whatever circumstances gender needs to be identified, we probably need more descriptives than simple male/female.

What on earth is going on in your head.

Also that question usually comes with two tick boxes.

Like such.

Well, yeah.

Where it matters, what do transgender people tick?

It's even easier to say male or female. Or did you skip biology class?

Well, technically it's not: it's three syllables vs four.

But there's no point in arguing about a term that can't exist without its opposite: Transgender - which you apparently don't believe in either. I thought this thread was an argument about terminology rather than a fundamental disagreement on whether or not a person could be transgender. It seems I gave OcUK too much credit.

adding additional words to the list along with male, female doesn't then require elimination of 'male' and 'female'

Actually this thread was a discussion on whether a 'cisgendered' actor could play a 'transgendered' character.

Or can a man identifying as male, play a man identifying as female.

Probably yes if he is acting.

Actually you could just have 'female' and cross out letters that do not apply :)

It probably does if we're seeking that level of granularity.

'male' is fine to cover both cis-male and trans-male if you're grouping them together.

But where 'trans-male' is separated, there should probably be a delimitation of what 'male' covers - by prefixing 'cis'

The term cisgender came into being for the same reason that heterosexual being into being: because people were using the term 'normal' as the antonym of homosexual/transgender. Normal is a powerful word. It is often used as a weapon to ostracise groups from society.

Gender should be defined for life by your determined gender at birth or what it is proven to be biologically. It's not possible to biologically change gender therefore it shouldn't be possible legally, either.

I'm not 'cis', I'm a male. What would the trans community do if 'cis' people started labelling the word cisgender as discriminatory? :D

Typical cis male... history is determined by which groups, defined as men, women, races, religions, etc., had power or dominance over other groups. Certain groups, especially cis males, are oppressors, while other groups are victims. Victims are automatically good, oppressors bad, just by what group they came from, regardless of individual behaviour.

All discrimination against oppressors is positive

why

cis is a term used only mostly by a fringe group and often in a derogatory manner

should there be a 'faggot' category under sexuality?

male is fine for most people and if you want to identify as trans male then having that as an additional category is fine too

having some labels the trans community and a few SJWs want to apply to the majority isn't really fine nor is there any need for it

Not everything's a battle. Just get on with your life and enjoy it. Life's too short to waste time always looking for the next fight.

Wow, just shows my ignorance, I had never heard of the term cisgender!

Kinda sad that everything needs a label, and needs to be classified, often in a derogatory way.

I'm going to go back to my ignorance is bliss status and live my life and not worry about such things.

Does the fact I'm glad I grew up before the World disappeared up it's own waste exit orifice make me a bad person. It all just seems so complicated. All I had to worry about was Reagan ending the World before I'd lost my virginity I would be seriously tired if my social model revolved understanding and/or caring about most of this type of stuff.
