Hey guys,

Need some serious help! My parents live in Spain, and im over visiting, and my first take is to fix the Wi-Fi that they've never had working, but need. They have a broadbandish connection I believe through their phone provider, which consists of a phone like, plugging into the provided ADSL router. At the moment, they are plugging an ethernet cable into this and straight into a laptop. This works fine and is what Im using now to type this. Not a problem! I tried everything I know to get the wireless router up and running, but nothing. 99% of the time I cant even pick up the wireless signal from the box, however, once in a while, it pops up and shows me its available. I dont know whether this is because I keep fiddling with the aerial or not though. Im never sat more than 60m away from the router though. And when it does show up, and I try and connect, it disappears faster than I can connect!

So yes, this is my problem, ive tried everything I can from reseting the router, to pressing every button on it thrice! The problem is I cant phone the provider, as they dont have anyone English speaking there to help deal with it, and although my parents speak a good standard of Spanish, its nothing technical enough to deal with this, let alone, they dont have a clue what theyre talking about most of the time anyway.

Let me give you the router details.

Its made by Comtrend I think? For Telefonica. Model number CT-5365. The SSID and passcode are on the bottom. The back of the router has an aerial, on off switch, space for the AC, 4 yellow LAN sockets (one of which Im using right now) and the socket for the ADSL socket from the wall.

The front has the following lights from left to right: Power, WPS, WLAN, LAN 1, LAN 2, LAN 3, LAN 4, ADSL, Alarma. Under this, there are two small buttons, one with a Wi-Fi symbol, and one that says WPS. When I press the Wi-Fi I can get the Wi-Fi and WPS lights to light up, and when I press it again, they will go off. When I press the WPS button, nothing comes on, but also turns off the Wi-Fi and WPS light when they are on.

So this...is all the info I have.

Can ANYONE shed any light or offer any advice on getting this thing bloody connected? Would be worth at least 2 bags of cookies!!

Thanks guys!

I'm on a diet, so no cookies for me :p

However I will try and help. Have you logged into the routers configuration page?

If not, open up a command promp window... then type "ipconfig" Look for "default gateway" Then take that number and type it into the address bar on your browser, internet explorer or whatever you use.

It should ask for a password... it may also be on the bottom of the router. If not, try "admin" "admin" - "admin" "leave password blanc" - "admin" "password"

If they fail, there is a site you can go to, to get the default passwords for routers. If you get stuck we'll look it up.

Once in the settings page. Post back and we'll go from there :)

Hey

Thanks for the quick reply. No I hadn't tried going into serious router config, as well, to be honest Ive never ever had to, so I wouldnt be sure what I was going. I followed your instructions and managed to find the default gateway, however none of the user name and password options you suggested, as well as a few others I tried worked. I also cant see anything on the bottom of the router that would suggest its there either. Do you happen to know the site I should be looking for?

Thanks again for the help mate! If you need any other details, just let me know!

And in case it helps, default gateway came up as 192.168.1.1

And also, Im not sure if it helps...although that model number is the same as on the bottom of the router, the pictures in the manual are VERY similar but not the same as the router here. The one here, has a extra light after power for WPS. Also the WPS button isnt on the back, its on the front, next to a button with a Wi-Fi symbol. could this be why the user and password isnt working?

Under the model number on the back, its says comtrend PN: 722497-023 and SN: 1085365XXXF-AG008660

The "WPS" button has nothing to do with it. IIRC "WPS" is a one button push method for authenticating security, rather than typing in the encryption key, you push the button on both devices to share the key. Good if you have a long secure key... bit of a gimmick really.

Hold the reset button on the router for more than 10 seconds until all the lights start to flash, that should return it to default settings and allow the password to work.

I REALLY do appreciate all the help guys! I have just tried the reset button, didnt work, tried turning the router off and unplugging, didnt work, then tried turning it off, then resetting, nothing....I keep putting in user: root, pass: 12345 and everytime I do, nothing the same box just comes back blank wanting the user and passcode. I have also tried ROOT, Root, RooT, even RoOt, and none are working? Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

Hang on I will look for the username and password for you. I've personally never heard of a username being "root" I was just taking the other guys word for it.

edit:

After looking up the comtrend password it's showing me:

COMTREND CT536+ MULTI admin (none)
COMTREND CT-536+ admin admin

So try admin and admin for both username and password. And also try "admin" and then leave passwors blanc. Remember it's minus the quotation marks.

When you say the resetting never worked, did you push a pin in the reset button for 10 seconds plus, while it was switched on?

Any joy with admin / admin? Or, perhaps admin / password?

Did the router come with any paperwork from the ISP? They might have set their own password (eg the routers sky supply have sky / admin as the user / pass.)

Ok, so I have tried admin/blank, admin/admin, admin/password, and every possible variant of all of those! And No luck at all. Nothing is letting me in.

I have tried resetting again, nothing, tried holding it for 10 plus until the lights go off and on again...they flash par say. I tried 20 secs continuing after they flashed, and 30 secs after they flashed. Did this whilst it was turned on yep.

As for paperwork. It comes with one basic instruction manual, and that is all. My Spanish isnt the best, however it just shows the basic set up of the router, as in plugging it in and how to turn the wifi on and select it from the wireless option on your pc, and where to find the username. It doesnt go into the actual diagnosics of it at all. So nope, no user / pass from Telefonica that is documented anywhere :(

Ok, so one problem down...on to the next one haha!

So yes, I can now get into the diagnostics page, I did what it did said within the translation, and disable the feature, which turned the WPS light off, and now enables me to constantly see the router on my available networks! Perfect.

Next problem is, I tried the passcode on the bottom of the router...told me it was unable to connect. I tried with both laptops. So I went back into the diagnostics menu and changed the passcode, and then tried with this. Same message. So I made the network open (They live inthe mountains, not scared about anyone stealing the connection if thats what it comes to.) But still...same messag!

So for more leaves and cookies...where do I go next?

If i remember right reading through the thread you had reset the router right?

Did you select the correct country in the wireless settings?

You can find this in chapter 7.1 in the manual.

Not being a smart ass but did you actually save the configuration to the router when you changed it to open?

PS: Country is a good point! although he can see the SSID he wouldn't be able to if it was incorrect.
