Can Gatsos get you on both sides of the road?

Just a quick question - does anyone know if a Gatso can successfully flash you on both sides of the road? For example, if you're overtaking and on the opposite side of the road, can the camera get you for speeding?

I'd assume so, otherwise you could just avoid the gatso by driving on the wrong side of the road :p

That's why they normally have markings on both sides of the road despite the fact that they can only "get" cars from behind.

Aint this in the sticky?

And no :P

I had a look in the sticky to start with and read through the Gatso information but couldn't see anything regarding this.

Just to clarify, I'm not talking about a camera on the otherside of the road flashing me when I'm driving towards it, but a camera which would have flashed me had I stayed on my own side of the road. Still say no?

This is what I was thinking.

In the situation I'm talking about, there are only markings on one side of the road.

One of the people I work with was caught speeding by a gatso whilst overtaking on the other side of the road, so yes, they can get you.

I imagine on single lane roads they just set them up how they are on motorways and dual carriageways, where 1 camera covers up to 3 lanes.

Yes.

But dont they only monitor one direction of traffic?

Which is exactly what you CAN do with a truvelo...

If you are doing 30 towards a truvelo, someone can overtake you going 90 and they wont trigger the camera...

The piezo strips are "lane" sensitive...

How many times I have overtaken a car in a 60 limit doing 40 past a truvelo and jabbing their brakes I cannot count...

New ones? -.- I know theres a blue camera on the dual carriageway and it aint for security, im sure this is a new one in the making!

More to the point, why were you over-taking in an "accident blackspot"?! :o

Very silly, hope it's not overly quick either as if it was to go to court I can't imagine you'd get off with anything :p

Sounds like a TrafficMaster camera to me. Was it hanging over the dual carriageway from the side of a bridge? They read number plates for the purpose of monitoring traffic flow.

A Yellow Gatso that is facing away from you as you approach it (i.e. on your side of the road it would take a shot of the rear of your number plate) CANNOT legally take a photo of you travelling towards it at illegal speeds.

Firstly, it cannot accurately determine your speed when you approach it (as opposed to travelling away from it).

Secondly, the lines that are on the other side of the road are for the purpose of people trying to 'avoid' the gatso, or overtaking, and .....

Thirdly, if one of those things flashed me in the face whilst driving towards it (bearing in mind how bright they flash), and I crashed, I would have a VERY strong case in court that the flash caused me to crash!

So, in short, No, it cant cover both sides of the road for two alternate lanes of traffic. It can cover the otherside of the road for cars overtaking or avoiding the Gatso.
