Can I access an EXT3 format disc via a USB caddy?

Aye, if you can set up xp to read ext3 it'll be fine over usb. I'm not sure what state windows ext drivers are in these days, they didn't look great a couple of years ago. I'd probably choose to run linux on the machine instead, just temporarily from a livecd or similar in order to avoid the drivers
