Hi there,

I finished college in june after completing my 2 year National Diploma.

The course was: IT Practitioners (General). I came out with the rather average Triple grade of: Merit Merit Pass.

I have been to the job centre and they were a bunch of useless ****** and were no help what so ever, they offered me job's that had no relevance to what I had given them.

Now although the final grade I came out with was quite poor, I still passed and completed the course. Plus many of the employers I have spoken to seem to be more interested in my personality and willingness to learn the roles required of the job but unfortunately I did not feel the job's were suitable.

Can anyone give me any ideas on what sort of job's I should be looking at? I have been searching and filled in many Application forms but seem to be a complete fail at finding a job. :(

i would say the answer depends on a few things.

what your career goals are long term ?
what you would enjoy?

amonst others, but i would say you should be working towards a longer term goal and getting some experience working in the field that fits in with your goals.

no one can tell you what job to get, you have to be the one decide what you want.

and i agree, a good attitude and ability to learn are by far the best things to have ..

Put together a professional looking CV and spam it to all the local companies. Just walk around and drop them in their letter box.

Hi there,

i was in a position just like you when i finished college all employers want at the moment is people with qualifications like us to sit there and input information, as "paulus" said what are your long term goals for example building pc's selling pc's???

The best thing you can do at the minute is take one of those 'unsuitable' jobs until you figure out the best route to where you want to be.

Unfortunately the job center is a bit useless for IT jobs, I wouldn't be too picky for your first job though, anything IT related would be good.

Take a look at jobserve and monster. Apply for anything that interests you and you think you qualify for.

From my experience of checking the job centre every day, there are very few jobs that "suit your criteria" going around.

The job centre will bring up a job that you are capable of as a potential stepping stone.

Job centre were useless.

Went in after finishing my masters in mechanical engineering and they said after a few weeks that I HAD to take whatever was there and actually do some work. i.e. picking+packing, fruit stuff, factory work.

I laughed in her face then said Il carry on sending my CV out and actually looking for relevant jobs :D

q4t.

I went in there once, tried using one of the super duper consoles, selecting part-time work in the local area. It offered me a full time job 30 miles away and the other option was "Army". Most useful.

I currently have a job in retail so I am in no financial rush, however the sooner I can leave the place the better.

I was originally thinking of a job in systems support and maintenance but I feel that employers would be looking for experience in the field and I have none, the same goes for a network administrator.

To be fair the job centre has to cater to a very broad spectrum of people, including most of those with little in the way of qualifications or experience. This means that they can't really focus on or specifically cater for people coming straight out of education with relatively specialist qualifications. After graduating I was on the dole and took an office job paying £10k because it was the first one they offered me which seemed even vaguely related to my skills and interests. There's no doubt in my mind however that I could have handled a £20k, more highly regarded job had one been offered to me.

You may find a better option is to contact the careers dept at your college/uni, as they will be much more focussed on that type of recruitment and indeed may well have contacts with corporations looking to bring in some raw juniors/trainees.

I found Reed.co.uk were quite good.

I applied for loads of places on there and heard back from quite a few. Got my current job through them aswell.

I agree. It's much easier to find work once you already are working imo. Apply for even semi relevant jobs as it will mean you are earning some money and will also show future employers that you are willing to graft.

Armed Forces :D

I certainly wouldn't rule it out. My career is doing well now and my GF wouldn't let me even if I wanted to. But if life had worked out differently I could see myself going into the army. Probably would have studied something like engineering at uni instead of animation.

TBH you're highly unlikely to get anything in Systems/Network support/admin without at least a couple of years experience. If support is definately where you want to be, maybe look for 1st/2nd line support?
