Can I get anything worthwhile for under 1k?

not all 1.8's are turbocharged, there is also the 125 bhp NA version.
Remapping a high mileage 13 year old turbo engine is also not exactly on the same postcode as / A to B basic motoring.

The more I think about it the more I am tempted to make an offer on that 1.8T looks like they can be a bit of fun if you get them re-mapped.

Seriously!?

I think you need to take a long hard look at what you want. You tell us you just want reliable no hassle very cheap car to get to work and back.

So why do you keep showing interest in cars that are nothing of the sort? Now you find a rubbishy cheap Mk4 GTI turbo Golf and are asking about remaps!

What a waste of time this thread really is. Talk about denial, you don't have the money for the sort of car you keep suggesting.

P.s. the MK4 Golf was CAT D and I didn't realise so I didnt even drive it as it was pretty battered and apparently struggles into 1st gear, nice of the **** to tell me that on the phone before I drove an hour to see it.

Well if it was cheap and too good to be true there is probably a reason for it...

That 1.6 focus:

That one that you linked earlier looks like what you are after^

It makes me laugh that it says "SHOWROOM PERFECT" though. haha.

It looks a real bargain doesnt it

"I am selling my winter This is a great touring car aswell as turning into a sports car when you stick it into the corners "

Started wondering there and then whether this guy had ever even driven his own car - rest of the advert is quite hilarious, especially when we get to the "done" sides

"some one has painted the lower part of the front bumper in black paint for what ever reason i was not too bothered about it so i never bothered cleaning it off "

Haha :D

It's in Chorley the OP is not prepared to look further than the end of his road.

It was more of a suggestion of that type of vehicle rather than that specific vehicle.

Mpg an issue for you? If not my £600 jeep Cherokee has been faultless for the last year. A simple fluid change every year keeps them on the road pretty much. Leather seats, air con, electric windows, mirrors and seats. Soft, squishy and much like driving around in your armchair most of the time.

Anyway, looks like someone beat me to the Cherokee suggestion. Mines for sale but over the OPs budget (and a billion miles away)

OP, why are you looking at ancient old Golfs? If really you want to get the oldest, highest mileage hatchback for your budget that is certainly the way to go, but if you want something modern and reliable then listen to peoples advice.

The Mondeo is a good choice at this end of the market, big boot, safe, reliable, pretty decent to drive and there is a massive selection to choose from. If you really want something from the VAG stable then you need to avoid VW and Audi badges. As well as the Toledo, consider the Skoda Octavia; both are based on the Mk4 Golf platform and both offer much better VFM than the Golf.

I don't consider MK4 Golfs as that ancient.

I took that 1.8T GTI for a drive just not and it drove just like one I sold for £3750 a couple of years ago that had done 35,000 miles. For £1200 I don't think it was bad to be honest having driven it I'm actually tempted. But I do love Golfs having had 5 already.

If you want a bit of fun, and a modern well looked after low mileage 1 owner car but aren't too bothered about looks. Check out Xsara VTS's, great cars that are literally worth zilch.

53 plate, 65k, 1 owner

You obviously want a Golf so go buy one and stop wasting everyone's time pretending you want a reliable, cheap to run no hassle car.

Fair enough the Mk4s aren't that ancient, but you were looking at Mk3's which are. A 130,000 mile old turbocharged engine is not compatible with cheap and reliable however. There are much better options if you need to run a car on a tight budget.

BTW, all the 1.8T's are turbocharged, the 'T' is the giveaway. There is also a normally aspirated 1.8 20V engine that was fitted to VAG's of this era.

Yeah :) today I drove all three (including the 2.0 GTI) out of the three I much preferred the 1.8T

Just buy a golf. Btw the xsara vts is an excellent suggestion, can get then for so little that if (when) they break it just doesn't matter

Wow those xsara's are a lot of car for the money! My only reservation is that it looks expensive on the insurance, group 16 seems high for that.

Of course you did, becuase in an ideal world the 1.8T is the best engine.

But you told us to spec you a car which would be dirt cheap, cause no hassle and be suitable for getting you to work and back.

We've done this - at length - and provided lots of useful advice. You've ignored us at every turn and posted link after link to bottom of the market trash that would be better suited to a far higher budget.

If you had £2-4k and wanted a decent quickish hatch and were prepared to pay the costs involved in running one, then a 1.8T Golf would be worth consideration. But you told us you had less thsn £1k and wanted a CHEAP TO RUN CAR.

Perhaps you are having trouble getting over the fact you have a low budget and are instead drawn to dodgy junk and bottom of the market cack as a result?

Buy a car thats sub £1k because nobody wants it not because it's amongst the worst of that sort of car on the market.

Or go and buy your Golf but don't come running crying when it needs work done it, or something goes wrong, or the tyres cost more than you'd expected, or whatever.

Unlike the 1.8T Mk4 Golf though they are a genuine hot hatch, proper Clio 172 alternative. Insurance groups don't mean that much, I've been insured on one since I was 21 quite cheaply. Not that great on fuel though, 25 round town max & 35 on a run. I average 30 pretty much.
