Can I have it all - probably not. 430d / 640d?

Performance was paramount.
There’s really no need for the crazy top speeds modern cars a capable of.
If I could I would happily buy a new MK1 Golf, that’s all I really need for personal transport
(I use a van for work however)

An ultra eco diesel could be an option with ad blue & DPF etc.
But we only need around 1500cc displacement and that’s generous.

A smaller engine has to work harder to maintain a higher speed. That's why, as a general rule, larger engines are more economical on extended long drives at higher speed even when you take gearing out of the mix. A larger engine with higher performance can extract more energy per engine rotation and therefore more energy per time.

Please can you explain why 1500cc displace is the only thing we need? There are different horses for different courses.

I miss my e90 335d. The engine was great, and it was relatively good in the economy department even with near enough 400bhp. However, would I own another diesel?

I don’t think I would. Long term, the reliability issues are something to consider. If you’re buying brand new this isn’t a problem but second hand at a couple of years old...it can be.

And totally unnecessary
You don’t need a 3 litre turbo charged engine to propel a family saloon.
Enjoy your electric vehicle that will be coming to you soon.

It's time to face facts, the vehicles we are used to are over, large diesels are the biggest offenders.
You can't tell me that a diesel particulate filter is totally effective, especially on shorter stop start journeys.
The electric vehicle propaganda is a total scam.
We could clean the air with immediate effect buy reducing top speed and limiting engine sizes of vehicles sold (as well as limiting maximum power outputs).

All diesel was is a tax dodge, who in the right mind would want a diesel car?
BMW make some fine petrol engines, in fact some of the best, but even those are/where totally over sized for the type of vehicle the where designed to power.

Driving a car/vehicle isn't a God given right, it's a privelage. One that future generations probably wont be able to enjoy like we have.

You know a diesel VW Polo is a larger pollutant than a 44t Scania, right?

He appears to have a BMW Z4. What an absolute waste of resources such a car is, all of the harm of a large petrol engine but it can only seat 2 people! Nobody needs a 2 seater roadster.

I own 5 vehicles,

a Citroen Berlingo van. 1.6 HDI which I use for work
A Gen 10 Honda Civic 1.0 that we use day to day and my G/F uses for work.
I also have a 2008 Z4 2.5
And 2 classic BMW motorbikes.

I was referring to family transport.
Why would you need more than 1.5 when the speed limit in this country is 70mph?

So why do you drive a car with a bigger engine than that?

The reason I drive a Z4 is the same reason I drove a Skoda.
They offer incredible value for money, it’s insured as a future classic which costs around £200 with commuting included (only 6000 miles though)
They are virtually rust roof which you can’t say for most classic cars.
There’s nothing to touch them for the money, I’m 6’3” so my options for sports cars are limited anyway.

Like I said, different horses for different courses. That's why you have five vehicles, right?

I have 5 vehicles because I like vehicles.
Despite having 5 only 2 are ever on the road at the same time.
With the only exception being the Z4 they are all capable of 50mpg anyway.
I can still enjoy my Z4 roof down at legal speeds, plus it makes a nice change after being stuck in a van all week.

I don’t ‘need’ a 2.5 6 cylinder Z4 so isn’t it about time someone made a small engined affordable roadster I can fit in?

Sorry Mr Punk.
I apologise for hijacking this thread.
I’m not really calling OPs choice in cars, it’s not his fault or car manufacturers faults that large diesels exist in the first place.
Governments virtually forced us down that road.
I will start my own thread because it’s something I feel passionate about.

BMW did, you just ignored it when you purchased the grossly overpowered larger engined 2.5 litre instead.

It's perhaps the most wasteful Z4 ever made, offering as it does all of the environmental impact of the 3 litre variant without the performance. A purely indulgent purchase made only by those who crave 6 cylinder refinement.

Which one?
You’re not referring to the unreliable essentially worthless U.K. made (Engine) 4 cylinder Z4 are you?

I bought it because I wanted an open topped car.
My last convertible was a Westfield SE wide which costs around 3 times what the Z4 costs and is less practical.

Plus I only do around 3000miles a year anyway and non of those are stop start commuting miles.
I have actually seen 40mpg out of it, Manchester to the NEC

I quite enjoy the raucous little 3 pot in the Civic.
My two cylinder boxer motorbikes are agricultural at best.
It wasn’t refinement why I chose the 6 cyclinder model.
As for the 3.0? A nice 3.0 costs double what a 2.5 does, it’s only a bit of weekend fun.

I would buy a new MX5 if I fitted in it.
I tried and it was comical, plus they are far from cheap

Do we have any pictures of this 640d yet? I've been tempted to look at replacing my 520d Touring with one.

However after reading all of SkodaMart's posts I may choose to do my drive to Germany with four passengers and a trailer in a 1 litre Fiesta instead...

I think you can go in a viper so long as you stay under 70mph if I'm following it right.

I am, yes. As for worthless, you go on to then say..

So clearly your 2.5 isn't exactly valuable is it?

You're being a complete hypocrite. If you drive a Prius and only a Prius perhaps you could lecture us on the engine sizes we select for our cars. But you drive a 2.5 litre Z4, so you can't.

Just posted in the BMW thread but can't hurt to post here to bookend this thread:

You can see the soot coming out of the back even when's it not on! :D

Looks lovely, bet it's a gorgeous drive over the Skoda!

I'd have to get the GC myself as I'm not a fan of having less doors than seats. Not a dig at the car though, just my personal preference!
