Basically, im looking to be able to display to my two monitors and my TV at the same time.

Would i be able to do this with a single GTX580, or would i need a second card to display to the TV?

IIRC you would need another card to output to a 3rd monitor/TV. It's expected that the dual GPU card will support 3 monitors off one card though.

Nvidia surround (or 3d surround) is only supported in SLI mode at the moment.

I do have a pci-e 5200 , can I just run that in a second pci-e slot (it wont affect my performance of the 580?)

You can just run that in another slot. It will depend on your chipset as to whether it will affect the performance of the 580, but as long as the 580 has at least 8 lanes of PCIe2, it will be fine.

3 or more outputs from a single card is very easy to fix: Displayports.

ATI cards cannot drive 3 displays (well i know the 5000 cannot) unless you use its displayport.

if nVidia removed one DVI with displayport or removed the useless HDMI socket for mini-displayport, then everyone will be happy. i'll be very happy since displayports are so easy to use, none of the crappy thrumb screws to fiddle with.

You can get adapters for the Ati cards though for display port to dvi

I have a feeling that this is not a simple case of remove a dvi, add a display port or two and hey presto. Somebody correct me if I am wrong but does the complexity for this not lie in the pcb. Adding complexity (another display pipeline from the gpu) to an already complex 580 pcb could have been a difficult ask, couple that with the big bus used and the pcb becomes very complex and very expensive to produce.

but to say that the ATI cant do 3 Displays on one card is plan wrong.

both ATI and nVidia cannot do 3 display is in the sense that both cannot output to 3 displays through DVI or similar signal type.

nVidia is too stubborn to put displayport on their card. if they do, there won't be any of this problem, it will behave the same as ATI cards.

removing a DVI port and replace with Displayport actually means less circuitary because DP doesn't require a transcoder.

EH?? ATI have a display port on the card therefore can use 3 displays from 1 card. You contadict yourself in this post

3 independent video out put ports are 3 independent video output ports no matter what type they are.

The fact that they are not all DVI is irrelevant to the facts of 3 independent video ports.

One of my monitors is still VGA it uses an adaptor.

The definition of is not governed by the type of interface.

Can a single ATI drive 3 displays yes.

How about the ATI eyefinity 6 display cards it has no DVI at all that does not mean that it cant drive 6 displays.

This... It is not the type of port but how many display pipelines are built into the pcb.

To answer the op, you should be able to plug all 3 in and switch between what port is being used to output in the drivers (normally by dissabling one display and activating your tv).

Driver profiles should help you do this fairly easily but because the mini hdmi and one dvi on the card are shared you will only be able to output to a maximum of two displays at any one time.

1) I know but that's not the point of what we are on about.

The ATI has enough on the cards that are available for 3, 6 & maybe 12 displays but i don't know if the 12 made it into retail.

This is a big left down for Nvdia not being able to run 3 screens on 1 card, unlike AMD who are miles ahead with this feature.

I know matey but the thread kind of got a bit derailed.

For the op its a good excuse to get some 580 sli going though :) if you have the pockets and cooling for them that is.

No.
580gtx aka 485gtx only supports 2monitors.

Either wait for 6970
Get a 470SLi, which will beat it in performance.
Or 460sli which will equal it.
