Can I pick your brains on tyres?

Hello all, first post in motors, so please be gentle.

Was looking over the car on Saturday (03, Focus ST170) and noticed the front tyres were looking a little shallow on depth so thought i'd check them out and they're slightly above the TWI's.

Now I know next to nothing about tyres so thought I'd ask in here since you guys all know your cars and tyres very well and see what recommendations you all have.

It's currently running Continental Sport Contact 2's (215, 45, R17, W, Extra Load) but these are averaging £130 a corner (fitted, balanced etc) and we've got a wedding coming up to pay for so I'd rather not pay out for these unless they are really the best option (then I'll happily pay it).

Any help would be appreciated.

ContiSport Contacts should be ~£60-£80 max. That's what I used to pay. They aren't too cracking though.

That was for 16s.

Blackcircles are showing Falken FK452's in that size as £78 each, fully fitted.

Or Toyo Proxes T1-R at £92.38

Or Eagle GSD3's at £91.54

You can probably get them all cheaper at other places. BC don't seem to be quite as competative as they used to be.

I'd be happy with the Falkens, tbh. A few of the Cerbera owners are using them (myself included) and if they are considered capable on a 360hp+ RWD car, they should be alright for an ST170.

I wouldn't try BlackCircles again. They were **** for me. Really, really bad service.

MyTyres were very good though :) Plus a local place does price matching.

A friend of mine has an ST170, he's just got some Toyo T1R @ £90 a corner fitted. I'd imagine if you ask around some local tyre places, you should be able to get a similar deal rather than £130 a corner.

They were OK for getting the Falkens, even cheaper than Falken direct when you included fitting costs, but they were miles off the price when looking at tyres for the Saab. I ended up going to a high street fitting place (Hi-Q, or whatever they're called).

Service seems dependant upon the place you choose to have them fitted at. I've never bought tyres on their own though, so I don't know about delivery.

I got a pair of Eagle F1s (GSD3s) from mytyres in that size for my ST200 about 6 months ago - £80 or so and they're still around that price.

How are the Proxes on wear? Everytime i've heard anyone mention them they've always said they had excellent grip but not so good on the wear front.

Thanks for the help so far guys. Much appreciated.

I cancelled before I ever turned up at a place for fitting. They tried sending me to three different places for fitting. i went to one place and it had shut down, went to another at the agreed time and it was closed...

They didn't know their ass from their elbow.

The sidewalls are pretty stiff - certainly stiffer than the GSD3s. Toyo supposedly engineered them that way to keep more of the contact patch on the road. I think the dry weather grip is exceptional.

Yeah, I found them to be a bit stiffer then the F1's they replaced.

The mytyres F1s are XL and have a reinforced sidewall, I haven't noticed them being soft or otherwise really. The camskill ones aren't XL however.
