hello all

This question probably has a simple one word answer:

My spec is
AMD Athlon 4000+ SOCKET 939
1GB corsair DDR ram
Nvidia nForce 4 chipset

Am i able to upgrade to DDR2 RAM, and can i use a GeForce 8800?

Thanks
Jessola

What motherboard do you have?

It is most likely that if you want to use DDR2 you will need to change your motherboard.

If your motherboard has a pci-e slot then you can use a 8800.

PS. You will need a half decent PSU to power the 8800.

You're stuck with DDR with a S939 chip, but you can run a 8800 on that board assuming it's got a PCI-E graphics slot (it's NF4 so it should do) .

Its an ABIT AN8-SLi

I have 2 PCI-e slots so thats fine.

Is a 580 watt Hiper good enough for an 8800?

If he's had as long as the rest of his rig I don't see any reason to be worried. It's only been the recent ones that reliability has been poor.

As far as I know the cpu will be a bottleneck with 8800...

Just about any CPU is a bottleneck for a 8800. They are monster gfx card! :D

He is right though. But.. it will see a massive improvement and you can keep it when you eventually upgrade the rest of your pc.

It's a fairly recent hiper bought it in november 2006 its one of the modular ones

i probably won't get an 8800 with this setup as everything else is pretty naff nowadays, but the point about keeping it is good. i may consider this.
