Hello all :D

The title says it all really. I have inherited an iPad where the connection port is buggered therefore meaning it can't be connected to a PC. Is there any way to update the iOS other than USB?

Thanks for any help offered ;)

Do you know where it might be worth taking it to? Will Apple stores just be a rip-off? Don't want to spend lots on a potentially lost cause...

May be worth getting a new port fitted then.

Thanks for the suggestion by the way, didn't realise you could just get the port replaced.

The PC registers the device being connected and charges at a very very very slow rate but states USB device has malfunctioned. Tried with macbooks also with no luck...

USB charging is always very slow on an ipad. Is that failing the only reason that you think the port is faulty? If so, I'd try another PC. Plenty of people have had the same issue with iphones in the past on certain motherboards These issues were usually fixed with BIOS updates later on. Untill an update was released for my motherboard, the only way I could connect an Apple device was to temporarily enable c-state in the BIOS. Not sure if newer sockets even have that.

Tried it with a couple of PCs and Macs but still have the same issue that it is not recognised. Separately, the time to charge the thing is about 12-18hrs...

If its an iPad 3 or newer they have a massive battery in there which does take a long time to charge. Its about 6-8 hours when using the proper charger which chucks out 1.5A if I remember correctly. USB will only be 500mA so thats why it takes so long (if it charges at all)

Would look at getting the port sorted then enjoy it.

Thanks all. Will look into getting the port replaced and report back on progress for anyone else who might encounter a similar issue... :D

If you can get the parts there are youtube vids showing how to do it yourself! Is it the original ipad? Console doctor will repair it for £30. Anyone have experience of them?

Thanks, may have to look at doing it myself. Two phonecalls made so far:

iStore - unable to help but suggested taking to to official Apple Store but imagined that the whole unit would need to be replaced rather than individual components - circa £200...

Apple Store - told me I need to book an appointment at the Genius Bar about a week in advance and weekends are notoriously busy. I've heard about this appointment malarkey before - very annoying!
