Its this - Maximus Formula VIII currently has a 6700k in it, is it possible to upgrade it without changing the motherboard or do i need to swap the board out too if i do it?

Was hoping to slot a 9700k in or at least re-use my watercooling block if i have to change the board too (its a crosschill EQ block)

intel 8000 and 9000 series need a new cpu socket so won’t fit but your cpu block will fit the new cpu’ and the new socket though so no upgrade needed there

Yeah, I guessed it wouldnt, im not confident enough with the plumbing to drain it and change the block. Been trying to decide between a whole new PC or just upgrading the board, cpu and ram but im not sure its worth it really, have the urge to upgrade but im not sure it would be much benefit.

Just do the board cpu and ram, imho... the money saved can go into other things.

A 7700k is not a worthwhile upgrade from a 6700k, more a sidegrade and a complete waste of money. Either stick with the 6700k and overclock it if it isn't already or change the motherboard and cpu. If you elect to change the motherboard and cpu personally I would only go with AMD's Ryzen, probably a 3700x and a X570 or even a B450 motherboard as long as it'a a MSI Max version or has bios flashback.

Just curious as to why the 8th and 9th gen need a new motherboard if its the same 1151 socket, could you not update BIOS? I've been AMD RYZEN for a while now that's why I'm asking the question as I have no idea about boards and sockets for intel

I suspect ill probably just go for a complete new system with ryzen 3900, and palm my old pc off to my daughter.

Because Intel said so.

Also apparently to do with the way power is delivered to the CPU but I've seen modders managing to hack older boards to work with newer CPUs.

Just seems very odd not to make it easier for people with older Gen boards to drop in a new CPU that may have set them back a few £££

Tin foil hat time but I don’t think it’s allways down to intel. Msi ASUs gigabyte etc all make a lot more money from completely new wickets as everyone going for a new cpu has to get a new mobo also. And I think going back quite a few years intel said even 2 years a new socket is required so we all make more money and u provide intel with the best designs blah blah blah sorry but ASUS gigabyte etc all major partners with intel would have the most to loose not intel by stretching the sockets

Since your only upgrade path is the 7700K ain't worth because it is the same CPU.
You have you consider sell and change to something with better upgrade path? A B550 or B450 Tomahawk Max with a 3600 will serve you well and there is 4000 series to upgrade and all way to 16 core CPUs.

Current Z390 boards are dead end and so are the upcoming 400 series and their CPUs. (the new 400 would be as short lived at the Z270 just mere 9 months).

Otherwise again sell everything, buy a good cheap Z370 board and a 9900K second hand, assuming you find them cheaper than a 3600/3700X with B550 (next week) or B450 Tomahawk MAX.

What's your RAM speed?

32gb of DDR 4

Its rated 3200, but i cant get it to run above 2933 in my current board. Would i be able to re-use that?
