Can i upgrade my CPU only on my motherboard?

Still using my 3600C16 Ripjaws V ram got with the 6700K "half decade" ago.
And currectly working at 3800C16 atm with a Ryzen 3900X, having worked at 4133C17 with the 8600K and 6850K.

Thats some good value! Ive got 32gb at the mo, so was hoping not to have to upgrade it too. Just cant decide whether to upgrade or bite the bullet and go for the 3900x and a whole new pc or hang fire till the next lot of gpus and the 4000 series come out next year.

Since you have an ancient 6700K why looking for 3900X? If you do not plan to use all the cores, get a 3700X/3800X.

You can always upgrade to 4000 series all way to 16 cores. Just make sure you wait a week to see if the new B550 boards worth, otherwise my budget pick would be the B450 Tomahawk MAX.

Not on a budget persay, so may as well just get the best. But that might be a decent option just now, ill consider that one, cheers :)

An Ancient 6700k? It's 5 years old and about 10% slower than current gen unless more cores are needed. I would hardly call it ancient.

Do you have an example? I can't find any with far more than a 10% gap in games.

Pay a visit at egosoft forums, a good example how a game can make a quad core and a 6 core outdated :)
Otherwise why you do not look yourself on reviews, to see that there is a 40-50% gap today.

Look at guru3d benchmarks. Even on latest 9900KS uses a 6600K which wasn't that much slower than the 6700K.

The additional cores can help sure, but a lot of games still don't use more than 4 cores properly so it's not as big of a deal, plus if you go that way you could say the 9900K/S are ancient tech because the 3900X has 12 cores.

I looked at Guru3D too and saw maybe 15% gaps with the extremely rare 9900KS. I still don't find it 'ancient' unless you're buying a 9900KS to game at 720p.

The 3900X is a fantastic processor. Got mine less than a week ago but I am loving it as an upgrade to my 1700.

Very excited about tomorrow :D

Not sure ill see that much difference in games going from 1080ti to a 2080ti and the cpu upgrade but fingers crossed. My daughter is inheriting my old machine anyway so everyone is happy.

Yup that sounds like a great use. The 1080Ti is still a beast though, I kept mine cause I just couldn't justify £1200 for 30-40% increase. Let us know how you get on with it all and happy benching :D.
