Can I use a NAS drive as a regular hard drive?

Alright I have what no doubt is a stupid question. Can I use a Seagate hybrid ssdharddrive in a nas. I upgraded to a m2 drive on my desktop which disables two of my sata ports so now I have two seagate 2tb hybrid ssddrives. With a 4 bay nas coming I'm going to need harddrives and would love to use these. They are much faster than the wd black 1tb sata3 drives that I also have.

Do not see why not but not used Hybrid HDD (did not seem to sell well) as basically a waste of time as you either go SSD or SSD (Cache)+Mech HDD which is also a bit of waste of time now SSD are bigger/cheaper.

SSHD is fine for a NAS as are consumer grade drives - we all survived before NAS drives existed, also BackBlaze have used enough of them to illustrate that point, though they tend to pay attention to other variables eg cooling/vibration etc.

Personally, in a NAS, I would stick to a full matching set of NAS drives.

Western Digital Red
Seagate Ironwolf
Toshiba N300

Use this to calculate the space.

Either use SHR (RAID5) or RAID10.

Get a massive backup drive also to take backups of the data on the NAS.

I have 8 WD Red drives sat in a Mini-ITX chassis on my desk right now, and the issue of noise has never entered my mind - even at night.

Just my 2p.

I have a load of the 8tb Seagate drives. I just let them sleep and can only hear them when they spin up. slightly noisy on spin up but really not noisy in operation, at least no more noisy than my old spinpoint F1.

If you’re going with best practice, you may as well mention they ideally want to be from different production batches/dates/suppliers and you need a cold spare(s) + spare controller (or in this case NAS) with identical firmware loaded. Realistically in a home environment with reasonable backup strategy, that’s usually not going to happen.

It's more than when you start mix and matching random drive sizes, you end up with odd volume sizes and wasted space etc.

Might as well have a uniform setup if it's a blank slate.

If you want a Hard drive to be silent, buy a length of shock cord & fit it in your case with the 'Bungee Mod' method. You do need to be a bit creative though depending on the case you have, It would be more difficult in a case that does not have a 5.25" drive bay or these modern tempered glass show off your hardware type cases that are all the rage these days.
