Hi

I currently have a hitachi 320g hdd running windows vista 64 in my pc if i was to buy a ssd hd do i just have to plug it in and away i go or do i need to installl vista on it.

I just want to use the ssd for games really.

it would be an abosolute crying shame not to put your OS on the SSD. Games i noticed the difference over mechanical but the OS is where it really shines for me

Oh i see so i could put the operating system on the ssd and just format the hdd and use that for storing all my files on does that sound ok.

sounds fine. Depending on the size of the ssd you can also put your most used games/apps on that. ive got 60Gb for OS and essential apps and then a separate drive for lesser used apps and data

Yes, use the SSD for your OS / Apps / Games and then the old mechanical HDD for data storage. Obviously you'll need to decide what size SSD to get and the advice there is to get as large as you can reasonably afford as they are very expensive. Currently one of the favourites is the 128Gb GSkill Falcon which offers an excellent blend of performance vs price. The new OCZ Summit series are also reputedly very good and although not quite as fast as the Vertex's they are more affordable.

Its easiest to disconnect it for now and just use the SSD whilst installing Vista. Once installed, re-connect the old drive and you'll be able to access the data on there. If you have a lot of data on the old drive or no separate partition for Windows, you can just delete the old Windows folders, Program Files etc. If you do have a partition for Windows, just format that partition (after copying anything from My Documents and things of course).

Just remember you will lose all the data, so careful what you do on that one.
