can moving game folders from HDD to SDD corrupt?

Can moving game folders from an HDD to SDD corrupt the files/make the game run poorly?

Im thinking of getting an SDD but i can only really afford a good 40/60GB SDD (£100) so this is my plan!

I dont intend to install the OS on the SSD only the games that im play on at that time. At the moment i am playing mostly on lord of the rings online,oblivion and fallout 3.

Now i normally have all of my games installed on my pc at one time. If i have these installed on my OS drive (HDD) and move the 'popular' game folders over to the SDD would this cause any problems during the game?

If no, is it possible to move steam games over from one HDD to another? I have a slowish broadband and takes a good 9 hours to download 8-9Gb so when ever i reformat my hard drive i like to install all my steam games if i ever fancy having a quick game.

I know it may be a silly question lol I heard this can corrupt games a while ago. I near enough know this NOT to eb true, but its still there in my head lol

You need to use symlinks to move steam games about, kinda like super shortcuts.

It worked for me although I dont think you see the full benefit. Tbh I keep steam shortstroked on my HD its just simpler, I did have to reinstall a few things and ended up losing the games I had on the SSD- moved them about and steam didnt like it, but I put this down to my error.

You can back up your steam games, might be an idea to do this before messing.

cheers! I may just install steam on the SSD and force my self to be a tiny bit more choosie about the games i download .. OR could i download two Steams (one on SSD and one on HD) and then download the less used ones on the HDD and the frequently used ones on ssd..

if u install the OS on the SSD then it will speed up your general usage. Game load times wont improve by much but the OS usability will

Its not the loading screen im buying it for. The reason i am buying an ssd is for the loading textures while in game. Games like fallout 3, oblivion and LORDO suffer from stuttering when loading textures from HDD. When your unning along every (ingame) 20feet you get a large stutter. Its well documented that getting a SSD removes the loading stutter. Stutters P me off SO much. so to me its worth it

Also my window 7 starts up in around 30 seconds. Other apps open up pretty quickly too tbh. Im never sat there thinking "GOD!!! COME ON ITUNES!!"

Fallout 3 / Oblivion should not be stuttering because you have a mechanical drive. 99% of the people that play it have mechanical games drives (like me) and I have no problems.

Sounds like you need a CPU / GPU boost, which you clearly don't looking at your sig. Something is going wrong elsewhere.

I see where your coming from but The makers of fallout 3 have even said On high end graphics you may get a slight stutter in game when loading textures Same with lord of the rings online. I dont get a stutter in any other games except these and they are the main games i play. Stutters = me getting p'd off VERY fast lol. Nearly every one on the fallout 3 forums/LOTRO forums say a SSD cures the texture stutter and I even asked a question on here in the pc area and i got the same response (apart from the odd one saying "GET A RAPTER!" Today i even went to a local computer shop and asked about it. The guy something along these lines "Games are made to run on HDD's but yeah there are some games you will notice a large decrease in stutters." He then went on to tell me a game he plays .. I honestly forget what the game was called -_- I know it was a RPG. I do get warey of taking info on large upgrades from copmputer shops, as most just want too see your money! I got a huge confidence boost in his info when he said "unfortunatly we dont sell SSD's, but you can get them online"

You guys have to trust me on this one. Every person i have spoken too, every forum i have read and every question starting off with "Help i have aHUGE stutter in LORTRO/fallout 3" Allways end with some one suggesting getting a SSD.

In some of them the user ends up installing the game on there ssd/buying a SSD and posting the stutter has near enough gone.


Ive been searching for nearly a month on how to cure the stutter in lorto and fallout 3 and this is FAR the most prooven cure.

TBH i dont get any stutter in oblivion only when i use large HD texture MODS.

This is what i was thinking of doing. There would be no paging file/virtual memory, so less possible stutters and lag through access would be a positive. Maybe i have it wrong? but i'm sure most game enthusists recommend the page file on a seperate partition or preferably on seperate drive. Games only installed and running straight off of a ssd would be the way to go surely?, every little helps i suppose?.

Was it considered that absolutely all SSD's cure stuttering problem? Or only the medium to higher budget brands, e.g. Patriot PS-100 won't, but a OCZ Vertex would.

If you have all three volumes of Lord of the Rings how much space does it take up?

I've never had any problems moving the Steam folder, mines about 200gb so the last thing i want to do is start over dling all that.

I just move it, then open the Steam.exe and it installs the Steam service, did it yesterday
