don't rightly know how to explain this so apologies if it doesn't make great sense, but here goes!

i noticed a strange sound coming from my pc, it's not very loud and the best way to describe it is that it's like a scraping/scratching/squeaky kinda noise, but as i say its not loud, actually quite faint. i'm think its coming from the gpu, although it could be the hdd. i can 'make' the noise happen by opening something, say a program or movie or game, so that made me think hdd, but when i run furmark you can just hear it ever so slightly on start up and then it normally settles down, although it'll maybe appear a few times while its running and then on shut down, but it only lasts a second or 2 anytime it hapens then goes away. why i've gone off it being the hdd is that i ran disk defrag just to make the hdd do summat without the gpu and i don't hear it then at any stage

is it possibly a quiet 'capacitor squeal' of some type?

just wondering if any1 else has come across this, i'm not particularily worried as if something is about to cack itself everything in the pc is only a couple of months old so it'll be getting rma'd but just curious as to what it might be

cheers

i'd thought about that too, but i played about in CCC with the fan running at different speeds manually and the noise stayed the same, no louder no quieter. plus it hapens all the time, pc has been on constant for about 6hrs and it was there at the start and is still there. i've even had the gpu oc'd as high as it'd go and back to stock and the sound still occurs, again no louder or quieter. totally baffled!!

mine does that as well often turning the fan on 100% for 5 mins makes it stop, sometimes i just have to wait it out it's very annoying.

yea as i say i aint that bothered, dont think much is wrong its just a nuisance. i'll leave the fan on 100% for a bit see if that makes it go away

cheers mate

Sounds to me like there's a rat in your case.

ok trust me when i say i know what it is... its your hard drive..... mine done this i dont know why, dont ask me why but mine did exactly the same, proberly due to bad sectors or to many incomplete sectors..
i used ultimate defrager to move files to outter edge it helped but didnt make the problem/sound go away.... but a fresh install did,

now ive done a new install of win 7 and kept ALL my files off the main hard drive its dead quite,

the noise, its almost like sand being scratched down metal but stoping every ms but like noise...noise....noise while loading something. (....) being millisecond pause. almost like clicking but grainy!

i would in my experience of this noise and having the solution which is a fresh install as defragging doesn't fix then back all files up. then defrag them on the disc you've sent them to. reinstall your os and then put it all back on. but when i did this for mine i just brought the win 7 from tesco's for £60!

plus you get that new speed feel again to!

maybe he has got a rat/hamster running round a wheel powering his pc

right, well now i'm almost 100% sure its the gpu. was just browsing the internet there now and the next thing the deskptop flickered and the normally transparent toolbar at the bottom turned 'cloudy' and hw monitor showed my gpu temps jumped to their usual load temps and the 'noise' occured and lasted for quite sometime making me think that something was randomly trying to use the gpu. everything settled down after a couple of minutes and the taskbar bar returned to its normal transparent colour and the noise stopped

just noticed that as i scroll up and down a webpage the weird and not so wonderful sound occurs?!?!

any suggestions?

Unplug your fans EXCEPT the GPU, CPU. PSU Fan nought you can do about that. DON'T UNPLUG THE GPU or CPU fan

If your sure its the GFX Swap it out for another if you have it. Or you can take it out and try to boot your PC without the GFX card will complain with a load of beeps but if the sounds no longer there you know your right.

You can do this with the HDD's too, unplug it. PC will again complain but it will run and stop saying no OS installed or something similar.

Without having the PC in front of me or anyone its pretty hard to tell what it could be but the fact it changes when under load says it could be either CPU or GFX fans

I had something similar a few cards back. It started after an annoying water leak deposited half the res over the GPU. After ages spent peering inside a case I narrowed the noise down to a few of the components on the top of the GPU. I’m no electrical wiz but I think it may have something to do with the power feed. The harder the GPU had to work, the louder the noise became. My new card does make a similar noise when under load but its real quiet. It may have something to do with low grade components. As annoying as the old card was it never gave up on me.

I experienced said noise with my old system. Though it was fans or HDD at first, but turned out to be my ati 9700. Following this, ive heard a couple of similar stories with ati gpus

tried all the above and yup it be the gpu

i take it there is nadda i can do about it? and it wouldn't be reason enough for an RMA?

has any1 come across this sort of 'strange noise' in relation to a psu? the noise tho not loud and not even audible when playing a game/music/movie with speakers turned on was doing my head in so i took it all outta the case and booted it up on a bench and my ears are telling me now that the squeak or squeal, whatever u may call it, is coming from the psu? i know anything is possible but is this common with power supply units?

i've probably got a touch of ocd or summat but just trying to get to the bottom of the noise
