im having a hard time understanding what i should have as a good vid on my q6600, i have had a few goes at overclocking but i have always worried that i was setting the voltage too high and then reset it to stock

coretemp shows my vid as 1.3250v so what would you think is a safe voltage to put through the card to get 3gig out of it?

i recently had these settings at 3.3gig but then got a bit worried and put it back to defult :p

another thing i dont really understand is what setting i should have where it says "DRAM Speed (CPU : DRAM)" as it changes as i increase the clock speed

my ram is Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX & my motherboard is a Abit IP35 if it matters

similar VID to mine

should do 3GHz easy on stock voltages

core voltage is WAY to high
needs to be around the 1.3500v region for 3ghz - 3.3GHz at your VID
maybe lower

DRAM Speed (CPU : DRAM) is the strap

i have mine set to 333 on my asus board - get it so it matches your ram performance

for you try to get it so your ram is running about 800Mhz
your ram voltage is at max so leave that there for the time being [do you have the 2X2gb kit?]

try putting external clock at 400Mhz
and multiplier at 8 so you get some nice round numbers to work with on your ram

that should put you at 3.2GHz

then test for stability and work on
CHECK TEMPS

what cooler are you running?

thanks :) im using a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and its a 2x2gig ram kit
looks like its a good thing that i worried about having it too high :p
ill give it a go later and post how i get on with it, what would you say is the best software to test stability? there seem to be a lot out there and id like to use a good one

cooler should be fine until about 3.3-3.4GHz
as long as you get your stable voltage low

get cpuz for checkin your speeds

coretemp for checking your VID and then your temps

and prime 95 for stress testing

use blend test and turn off auto rounding

if you google that stuff and get going with it you should be ok

i will check back tonight and see how you are getting on and if i can help any more

thanks :) i just downloaded all the programs you said and ill do the overclock tonight some time then run the test

i noticed something a bit strange tho when i was checking the programs, for some reason my multiplier keeps changing from 6 to 9  it shows this in cpuz and coretemp
here is a picture of the 2 speeds it keeps going between

Thats speedstep in action. When the CPU is idle it drops the multiplier to lower the power being drawn and heat coming from the chip.

OCUK really need to sticky this.... (no offence but this question is asked sooooo many times a week)

ahh sorry ,must be annoying :P i searched for multiplier but couldnt seem to find anything, am i right in thinking that i should turn this off for overclocking?

it seems like the highest i can take it at stock voltages is 2880MHz
it gave me this error at anything higher

FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

i also tried to up the voltage to the next setting up but it was the same thing, any ideas?

speedstep/c1e on intel boards, have a look around your settings, 1.465 is far too high for just 3.0-3.3GHz, i'd drop it too 1.35v, and up it if it becomes unstable.
The best overclocks are the ones using minimal voltage for maximum speed! ;)

gl :)

Those rounding errors you're getting in prime, I had the same thing at stock on my rig when I built it. It turned out to be faulty RAM causing it, get hold of memtest and give the RAM a check.

I don't usually read sticky's as they mostly seem to be out of date, and I assume a lot of other people don't read them either.

Especially when the thread has a title as 'can someone explain if this is good or bad?'.

To the OP: 1.465v game me a huge shock when I saw that!:p

well im trying to play it safe with the voltages now :p
i have managed to get it to run at 3Ghz with these settings

problem is that im still getting the error in prime95 :(
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4

as you can tell im a complete noob when it comes to overclocking so i have taken a photo of eash of the settings because im clueless on what to try next

small update, i have increased the cpu voltage from 1.3250v to 1.3650v & it hasnt givent me the error yet :)
is this a suitable voltage to have? my temps are about 38c idle and around 60c under load

as long as its under 1.4 then thats fine 1.4v is the limit really after that bad things happen to the cpu it starts to degrade etc

thanks :) its been ok in prime95 for about an hour now so i think its finally stable :D

how long should i leave it running for?

thanks :) well i let it run for 2 hours with no problems, i have to do some things now but later ill let it run for 8

lol, I've had my Q6600 at 1.61 vCore for a while, with air cooling. Haven't noticed any problems so far :)
