Can someone explain the PvP rules on a PvE server

I’ve been playing WoW on a PvE server for a couple of months now, but I must be missing something when it comes to the conditions for PvP.

I thought for 2 players to engage in PvP, one or both would have to be flagged. I thought this because there have been times when I haven’t been flagged, but have been attacked and killed anyway.

The other day I was in Tarren Mill, minding my own business, when there was some Ali kicking around. I wasn’t flagged for PvP, but some Rogue knifed me in the back and killed me when I wasn’t ready. As they were all several levels lower than me I thought it’s payback time. I summoned my Felguard and went to clean house. I killed 2, but couldn’t attack the 3rd. I thought he must have disabled PvP, so I thought I’ll enable PvP and get the SOB. But when I enabled PvP, I still couldn’t attack him!

It seems if anybody wants a pop at me, they can do any time they like. But if I decide I want to have a go, they can do something to prevent me attacking.

Can a WoW expert explain what’s going on?

I also saw another Horde player the other day who was red and could be attacked. What’s that about?

Both players have to consent to PvP for it to happen - you can easily tell a players pvp status by the colour of their name floating above their head. Blue denotes a non-PvP flagged player (horde or alliance), Green denotes a PvP flagged player on the same faction as you. Yellow denotes a PvP flagged player of the opposing faction when you yourself are not PvP flagged. Red denotes a PvP flagged player of the opposing faction when you yourself *are* PvP flagged i.e. danger.

You can ascertain your own PvP status by looking at your portrait in the top right hand corner. If your faction symbol (horde shield or alliance sword) appears then you are PvP flagged. You can become PvP flagged by typing in /pvp, or by attacking a yellow named player, or entering a battleground or arenas, or healing/buffing a green named player (prolly some other ways too). Once your PvP flag is set it takes 5 minutes of non PvP action before it goes off again. You can also set your pvp flag to be permanently on by typing in /pvp twice - you can toggle it back to the 5 minute rule again.

I don't know why you got attacked in TM - either there's an exploit they've used or you were pvp flagged without realising it.

You CANNOT be attacked unless you are pvp enabled, So you must have been for a rogue (alliance I assume) to attack you.

The only place way horde could be red to you would be if you were duelling, or in/around the pvp arena in STV. If you have a red symbol next to your picture, you are pvp flagged. When you attack another player, you become pvp flagged for around 5 minutes, however I think you probably have to toggle it off if you're in a contested/enemy area. Guards can attack you regardless of pvp status, and that will flag you too.

If you notice the red symbol, try typing /pvp. You might need to do it twice to get a message along the lines of "pvp has now been toggled off and will go in 5 minutes".

All correct apart from the above..you will only get flagged if you fight back.

Also remember that if you aren't flagged for PvP,but then you buff or heal a player who is flagged then you will also become flagged. As has been stated, for another player to attack you in a contested area you must have been flagged for PvP.

Again with the WOW trolling, I'm assuming your a Eve player yes?

hardly trolling, I was wondering as I played for a while and I couldn't understand what you gained/lost from PVP.
seemed kinda pointless tbh.

Still didnt ask my question, but I'll take your word for it. It's just really annoying when the EVE players aaaaalways bring up the same old acorn.
I personally dont play it myself anymore, because I got carried away.... not the game's fault though... my own stupidity.

Other than a repair bill for items, a trip from the local graveyard and a shot to the ego I don't think so. :)

No repair bills if it's another player :)

@ VeNT, you don't technically lose anything, other than the fact that it's annoying, but there are pvp rewards in the game.

I was close :). I've never been able to get past 20 on a pve server, as my boyfriend and his RL friends that we play with refuse to play on anything other than pvp :(.

Non-instanced pvp on a pve server is a complete waste of time. You cant get attacked unless your flaged or attack someone who is flaged. Or enter an enemy city.

what the hell did Vent say that even indicated trolling? It sounds like youve a little bee in your bonnet about WoW, rather defensive arent we?

I think Vents question is fine, several MMORPGS including the likes of EVE and Ultima take PvP seriously, you dont just die, you can loose everything. With EVE its ships, equipment, cargo, implants and even skill points depending on your clone. With Ultima, you would never try and carry anything expensive or rare as you could so easily loose it, making the game very very tense.

ive never heard anyone bring up 'that old acorn' before, but it is a valid point.

On a side note, ive played every major MMORPG relesed over the last 16 years, and ive noticed they are usually split into two types: Basic & Complex.

WoW would fit into the Basic group, its meant for general gamers, its not a hardcore game like EVE is, thats why its stupid to compare the two. Both have good and bad points.

WOW players seem to take issue with anyone insulting (perceived or real) their game.
when a guy asked about re-rolling a WOW char because he was sick of having to will till enough other people where online to do anything at his current level in WOW and I suggested that he try EVE (as you can do things solo and in groups) all I got was flames.
I think it can be nicely summed up with the average player age of EVE being 24-25 (although most of my current corp is older, I'm the youngest at 23) where as WOWs player base is much younger.

This isn't the first time that he has started on a WoW thread with typical Eve derogatory responses towards the game. He doesn't do it in the form of a productive statement, it is just trolling.

If people think VeNT is trolling they could always ignore him or report to moderator.

Personally I think all players of MMORPGs are just as bad as each other when considering criticisms of their game. As for WoW's age group it's no surprise it has a younger audience than EVE as it's a lot more popular than EVE will ever be. :)

if you think I'm trolling then RTM the post.
however it seems to me that you're just trying to get me to flame you so I've gone and put you on my ignore list.
bye.
