Hi guys

Had a few BSOD in Vista 64bit with 4gb (1gbx4) Ballistix 5300 in there so I burnt memtest onto a cd and booted from it and got the results below, only issue is a have never used it before so I don't know what they mean :)

Ram volts are 2.2 timings are 5-5-5-15 Is there another test I can do in windows and post results? Any help/advice would be great :D

It could be a faulty dimm or simply some memory option in BIOS needs to be changed, try each stick individually in slot 1 and see what happens, if it gives errors for one particular stick then that stick would be faulty, or if it gives erros for all sticks, then it is more than lightly just some BIOS setting needs changed for memory. :)

Sounds like a plan!

I'll have a go at that now..

Is there a program I can use to test the memory within windows, that someone could recommend?

Thanks

Does anyone know how accurate this In windows Memtest is?

Ive been running my pc for weeks without any problems at all, no BSOD what so ever, no crahes, frezzers etc....

As soon as i run this Windows Memtest i get a load of errors? :( :( :( :(

I mate

Ballistix with Micron D9GMH chips at 2.2V for 2/3 months ( if the pc is used a lot) are " finished" :D

after two dead kits at 2.25V(Asus P5B delx does not have 2.2V option) each one last two/ three months I learned the lesson :)

I´m using it at 1.9V , for 3 months now, with no one problem watsoever( fingers crossed)

Crucial advertise that ram at 12-3-3-3 at 2.2V but that voltage is not right for that memory at that speed - it only need 1.8 / 1.9V for it

this is marketing from Crucial, cause they now that the ram at 2.2V overclocks well beyond 1000mhz - so a lot of people ( overclockers of course) go for it, but the ram dies very soon ,IMHO :D

don't use any memory testing program in windows. it can't test the memory in use by the OS. only use the bootable cd version. and don't use the vista diag thing either as that's no good.... :p

memtest86+ is what I use rather than memtest86 - as it is more regularly updated.
Thats right :)

I don't think that windows based Memtest thing is very useful, at least not for me. I run Memtest86+ from a bootable CD for the first test, if that passes then its into windows and run Orthos Large, in-place FFTs test. not only does that pickup any memory errors it also picks up chipset errors (these can be fixed by bumping the NBvCore).

Nice little tip their, thanks Big.Wayne. :)

Now how would you differentiate between a Memory error, say the Memory voltage is to low as opposed to a chipset based error?

Thanks. :)

Well all you can do extra to see if its a chipset error is to add some more voltage (there is NBvCore, SBvCore and others), and to test if its a memory error would be to add some vDimm or relax the timings.

Tested and I have a faulty single stick

RAM running @ 5-5-5-15 2.2v so I'm going to RMA them :( oh well

Unlucky.

I don't think Crucial have the PC5300 in stock atm, but phone them anyway and get your RMA number.

Hi Cob

Don't suppose you have the number to hand do you mate?

I know you've sent some off in the passed :)

p.s. I have 4gb so I can survive on 2gb no probs

EDIT: Its ok got it off OcUK site - 08000130330

Yip that's it.

You'll need the model number (BL2KIT12864AA663) and the batch number(s) printed on each stick when phoning them.
