PGR3 at 30 fps whils doesn't look super smooth is perfectly playable

where as

toca, gtl, gtr etc at 30 fps look very choppy. Is something not set up right my end or is this the difference between consoles and PC's.....

I think it's the fact that it's a constant 30fps on PGR whilst in the other games it fluctuates around say 25~35fps. The human eye notices variations in fps more than it notices a low fps so it seems 'juttery' on the other games.

I could be completely wrong but this is just what I've gathered from other threads similar to this in the past. :)

Quake, being a first Person Shooter involves a lot of fast movement and direction changes, maybe you notice the lower fps because of the pace of the game?

As said above, I think it's also a lot more noticable when it's on a screen sitting right in front of you rather than a decent TV / TFT that's running at the right refreshrate and output to get the correct, stable framerates required to keep the game looking smooth.

Both games being pld on the same sammy 26" hdtv.....from the same distance away

just walking feels likes your walkign through sludge on q3 at 30fps

are you saying that the refresh rate is 30 when playing on 360, hence it not looking jerky....

The refreshrate on a TV will be 50 or 60hz. If a game is using a locked framerate, they will use either half or match the frames with the refresh rate. So on a PAL50 TV, you'd be getting either 25 or 50fps, on a 60hz TV, 30 or 60fps. You also get games which are not locked, but they can have tearing etc.

That still doesnt really explain it though...

NTSC console game, screen at 60 hz, game at 30fps smoothish...

PC game, screen at 60 hz, games as 30fps jerky as hell.....

Re-read the thread.
As far as I can see, he is asking why 30fps on a console (I assume on a TV) looks smooth compared to 30fps on a PC (assuming on a monitor.) The reason for this is interlacing and motion blur etc.

Maybe the game is using motion blur graphics effect to simulate real life. Movies are like 23-25fps yet look smooth because the motion blur of the camera makes up for it. This combined with the constant 30fps and 60hz refresh rate makes the picture seem smooth.

its down to the games engine wether they are 'smooth' @ 25 or 30fps. usually when framerates drop that low there is something else causing the low fps - ie cpu limitations. When you get that, it effects timings, things become unresponsive and jerky regardless of the fps, whereas a game thats designed from the ground up to run at 30fps wont be having those issues.

As for q3, thats a bloody old enging and everybody knows the q3 engine runs best at a high refresh (83mhz is it?) but thats because the games physics are dependant on the refresh rate. drop it and things start going wrong

movies dont use blur. Your confusing that with the 'blur' effect you get with interlaced TV, such as the PAL standard. Thats not blur either, but the way frames are interleaved means you achieve a 'smoother' framrate than you would with a progressive display at the same refresh rate. 30hz interleaved is basically 60hz progessive.
