Do you know how gearboxes work?

yes thankyou,i also know that these engines produce phenomenal ammounts of torque relative to the bhp output.we were not talking about gearboxes..were we?

Yes, it's very annoying. But you seem to be posting things which are not correct - now I've given you the benefit of the doubt and simply assumed you are mistaken.

How much torque is there at the wheels in an ST220 and an ST TDCi, out of interest?

never had these on a rolling road, but take the figures ford have given, which will most likely be at the flywheel and remove around 20-25% for drivetrain losses.

Surely we are, is the gearbox not instrumental in dictating how much torque is transferred to the wheels?

yes it is but we are talking about engine torque, the kind that is measured on an engine dyno, with no gearbox.as are most figures quoted by manufacturers.

No, we are talking about performance - acceleration. This is dictated to not by power at the fly, but power at the wheels.

The point I am making is that becuase the ST220 revs higher, the gearbox enables it to negate most of the torque disadvantage it has compared with the ST TDCi - therefore with both drivers gunning for it, the torque being sent through the wheels will probably be higher on the ST220 than that on the ST TDCi.

The only area where the ST TDCi will outperform the ST220 is acceleration ingear, which is only really relevant if we assume the ST220 driver has forgotten he can drop a few cogs.

does anybody actually own a ST220?

what sort of mpg do you get?

despite the fact that my 307 is a 1.4 i only get low 30's in towns, and 40 on motorways

Hold ya horses, you say that the Torque is why the TDCi is faster than the petrol, however when it comes to talking about gearboxes you run away from the subject? no one is sayin the petrol gives out more torque than the diesel.

I'm pretty sure you DON'T know how gearboxes work and what part they play, ever heard of ratios?

EDIT - FAO Deep, sorry for contributing on taking your thread off course, I will cease! :)

I didn't own a ST220 (although I was looking at one) however I did own a 3.2 Audi A3 (which would be roughly comparable in terms of fuel consumption) and well you *can* get 30mpg out of it if you drive like a saint.

Expect 25-30mpg on a normal run (maybe slightly higher on the motorway), Somewhere in the teens around town (stop and start traffic) and single figures when you really want to shift.

which is why the diesel has a 6 speed as opposed to the 5 of the v6

errrm

youre a ford master technician and dont know that the ST220 got a 6 speed box in the 2004 revision (along with the in dash 6 CD changer i might add)

this is wearing thin now ...

I cant imagine it being much different from mine - so you will get 20mpg in town.

on average how many town miles do you do a week? and how much do you fill up with?

Right, not only were you lying about the diesel being more powerful, im now guna go ahead and accuse you of lying about being a ford "master" technician. You clearly know very little about cars, and with what little you do know, you are making a fool out of yourself with.

Summed up nicely tbh
