Since this thread started, FSX was optimised by Dovetail Games and put onto Steam. They have also brought out 'Flight School'.
P3D is at Version '3' and is $200. This (apparently) better utilises modern hardware and is on DX11. However, those on licence "v.2.5" had to pay to upgrade to "v3.x" if they were past their refund timespan.
XP10 has come on in leaps and bounds and is now at version 10.5 Beta. With a cool feature taking Open Street Map data and building cities in 3d out of it in the sim.
FSX is still 32 bit, can be optmised a lot, can use the DX10 fixer for improvements. It still requires a beefy CPU, but won't necessarily utillise all of it, but if you're running web browsers, weather engines, comms and streaming, then the faster the better of everything. And install it onto an SSD.
The future is VR headsets and some kind of control such as 'FSX Fly Inside'.
I currently run FSX and XP10 as per the PC in my signature.
Flying in XP10 out of Aerosoft Heathrow on Vatsim, it still went down to FPS in the teens.
