Can Windows be external?

Just out of curiousity rather than a desire to actually do it, I have wondered whether it would be possible to have the operating system of a PC installed on a connected external HDD, or even a USB pendrive.

Linux can do it with ease take a look for Dame Small Linux as one distro that can do it out of the bag.

It can be dont with Windows XP but the problem comes when you put the stick in to a different computer and the hardware plug & play kicks in you could be there for a while.

Windows PE can be put on a usb stick (look for BARTPE).
