Can you be fired for having ADHD if they knew you had it when you started work?

You can't clump those two together mate. One you can grow out of, the other nope.
 
Just because you have a disability doesn't mean you can't be fired from a job, if your performance is affected you can quite rightly be dismissed regardless of whether your employer knows about your condition or not.

Comment had nothing to do with any claims of being able to grow out of either and was just related to portion of people diagnosed with this stuff. It was also made in 2014 so you're a bit slow to respond to it.

Seemingly, for example, America has (IIRC) 20 times the rate of ADHD compared with France. Are American kids massively different? Aside from being a bit fatter on average, probably not. Are French doctors inferior? Doubtful. The difference is down to how they've chosen to diagnose the condition... it is subjective in that sense.

So the vast majority of people in America who can claim to have ADHD wouldn't actually have it if they happened to live in France as French doctors require rather more extreme symptoms. Those kids would just be naughty kids and don't get dosed up on meds for their behavioural issues.

Anyway, suppose it did give us closure. Sounds like things worked out in the end @ubersonic ! Crappy situation to be in but what doesn't kill you etc! :)

As you attorney I advise you to do what Mr Badger says. Keep a record of when, where, what time, what was said.

And let it go over your head.

Try to work with them. Tell them what you think professionally, and preferably with someone else present. If it remains an issue ask for the policy and make a complaint with your evidence.

I was just thinking (I know, a first, right?), how do we know the OP wasn't being childish and silly?

Surely you can't say "I've got ADHD" and subsequently expect any level of bad behaviour to be tolerated.

Otherwise it's like Cartman when he claims to have Tourettes, and goes around shouting obscenities in the local mart.

So on the one hand I'm not going to dismiss ADHD (despite being extremely dubious), but on the other hand, surely there is a limit to the extent that you can "get-out-jail-free" by claiming to have it?

"Sorry for taking a massive dump on your desk, boss. It's the ADHD, innit."

ADHD doesn't actually cause bad behaviour, it causes hyperactivity and thus excess energy which in badly behaved children will usually see it channelled into enhancing the bad behaviour, but generally if you see/hear a parent claiming their child behaves badly due to ADHD they're just trying to excuse their parenting or lack thereof (NB: it does make their job a lot harder).

Regardless most people with ADHD manage to master controlling the hyperactivity during their teens, it's actually the inability to control attention focus that causes lifelong issues.
