A capacitor has fallen off my motherboard, and I was hoping to get hold of another one from somewhere and solder it on - but I don't know what the specs of it are or where I could get one.

Does anybody know?

470 microfarad (uF)
6.3v
Electrolytic SMD capacitor.

712 may be a date code.

eBay would be my first choice.

Looks like it has left its little holder behind so you'll need to get that off the board. It can be tricky soldering these things onto boards. You'll need a fine tipped soldering iron I would think, a steady hand and maybe some tweezers.

You are not looking hard enough or something.

Search term '470uF 6.3v SMD'

You can vary the 6.3v to higher values if you wish but you need to keep the capacitance value of 470uF the same.

SMD caps are quite expensive on eBay. Farnell will charge you postage and possibly minimum order.

You could substitute for a through hole cap if you can get it mounted on the pads ok and can shorten the legs enough.

That's strange - I thought those were the search terms I used last time, but twice as many results now. It seemed to imply postage was free at Farnells but there was a minimum £20 order. Bleh. I might think about cannibalising a dead board.

BTW, the cap it's replacing was not in a holder - it was just straight onto the board. Maybe that's why it came off. The soldering doesn't look too difficult - just need to make sure I get one that will work.

Looks like a decent match. The voltage doesn't matter that it is higher but you have to watch out that the package is not that much larger so that it won't fit.

I think you can go with the black ones without any problems. I really don't think it makes any difference what colour they are.
