Can you take unwanted upgrades into a shop rather than send them back?

My brothers friend had a new phone sent to him on Friday but he doesn't want that phone and so the customer service people said that he should send the phone back and wait a few days before arranging a new phone to be sent out.

He asked me weather or not he can take the unwanted phone into an O2 shop and change the phone there rather than wait for it to be sent back. I have no idea so I thought I'd ask you guys.

Probably not.

Shops are usually operated as an independent business.

What about three? If there is a three shop, can I take it back to there to cancel the contract etc?

You might, but as I said before shops are often a sepearte business to the telecoms operator and as such will often have their own deals to offer customers.

where did u get the contract from? and what network are you on?

if o2 directly, just call them up on 4445, it's free if you are on contract. they will answer any questions you have!! try asking if you can arrange a swap at a o2 shop, they might be able to do something like that!
