Canadian Grand Prix 2014, Montréal - Race 7/19

They'd have to reintroduce a way to refuel though if they were to add laps on. They already have to fuel save as it is.

Well to be fair as soon as the safety car came in there were radio messages saying fuel is good - so it wouldnt have been that hard to extend by a few more laps ( in general I agree though)

Not necessarily. It's a fuel efficiency formula now, it just adds to that.

I'd rather they used the Red flag in circumstances like the first lap incident this week, but they seem allergic to that nowadays as it messes with the all important TV coverage.

'Fuel is good' [to the end of the race]

No way in hell would that fuel supply cover another 7 laps at full race throttle. They could probably stretch it but you'd just have the final 7 laps being 'in-laps' for the field.

They fuel save as that's the fastest way to complete the race distance. Only way not, is to set a minimum fuel amount. Rather than a maxim they have now, which seems like a lot aren't even using the full permitted amount anyway. Fuel is weight which costs a lot for every single lap. It's faster to run less fuel and not have the weight penalty.

Fuel saving is part of modern f1 regardless of rules.

This. In lieu of refuelling this is the best strategy.

A minimum fuel allowance would hopefully put a stop to the amount of fuel saving we get for some races, letting drivers put their foot down, it's something I'd definitely like to see them seriously consider.

Extending the distance by the number of laps behind the safety car wouldn't work, but it could be altered so that every 3 laps behind the safety car means the race is extended by 1 lap, or something similar. That way the fuel saved behind the safety car is offset by doing an extra lap, so then fuel amount calculations would be as if the safety car hadn't happened (if that makes sense).

Either way, I would like to see a red flag for major first-lap incidents. When there's a safety car, the leader is generally able to pull out a bit of a gap by jumping the rest of the field - in Canada for instance, Rosberg was able to pull out a gap as soon as the safety car came in, which might not have happened if they had restarted the race from grid positions.

I'm not sure that extending the race would work so well at certain tracks which are already close to the maximum time, slow laps behind the safety car and additional laps at the end would mean extending the race time by too much for a lot of places.

Dohhhhhhhh - thats exactly what I was saying.

They were good for the race as it was for full race pace - there for with the "usual" amount of lift and coast could have lasted another 7 laps.

Very good point (unless they decide to amend the rule to "two hours of racing", but even that would have to be defined carefully , given the lift and coast everyone needs to do usually)

Interesting video about merc failure. Peter Windsor and ScarbsF1

He also thinks that vet and others aren't just rotating them, but they've used that many because they failed and is predicting grid penalties within in the next couple of races.
