Canadian Grand Prix 2016, Montréal - Race 7/21

I'm a bit more confused than normal, as regards the current tyre rules and what Vettel did at Montreal.

He started on the Ultras and at the first stop, changed to Supers.

The Sky commentary team then gave me the impression that Vettel would have to pit again, even if the Supers would get to the end of the race, because Softs had not been fitted and they had to be used in the race.

Or were Sky simply saying there was no way Vettel's Supers would last to the race finish and so he would have to pit for another set of tyres? Given how some drivers chose to not bring any sets of Softs to the race weekend, I suspect that Sky knew the Supers would die well before the race end and so Vettel was going to need to do at least two pitstops.

Funny watching that seagull chat after Vettel invaded Lewis' interview! :D

there's a tyre at every race that has to be used(unless wet tyres are used at somepoint)

At Canada it was soft tyre, so Vet had to pit again.

and yes its a retarded rule.

Only just seen the Hamilton/Vettel interview. I hope we see more of their battles. Vettel really does seem happy with Ferrari.

He's currently negotiating a new contract with them, so it's better to appear happy rather than bitching and moaning, as tbh, he's got a lot of reason to do at the moment.

I must say, I was bitterly disappointed with the performance from the Renault power unit. I was hoping Renault armed with there new upgrade could break the dominance that Mercedes have in F1. I am getting tired of the Lewis and Nico show. I really feel for McLaren, honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Honda pulled the plug.

It didn't do too badly with Max, Rosberg had good pace, that car had the ability to lay down the power. RBR had a quite unusual problem with tire management and both were significantly slower and had way worse tire life than you'd expect. Max was fast on the ultrasofts but went way to long on them, well pushing as hard as he was.

Could have been temps, graining, something but could have been new engine updates not quite working right software wise, too much wheel spin causing a bit of tire deg. Though considering Max's traction out of the hairpin to spoil Rosberg's day I wouldn't put to much money on it.

Ultimately Canada was fuel limited, it's why Mclaren looked way off the pace and even if Renault has made a step it's more likely to show in less fuel limited tracks. Merc's efficiency makes them incredible at all the fuel limited tracks and it's why Bottas was able to be much higher than usual as well. I would guess that the main boost for Renault was in single lap pace as opposed to long run pace. More pure power available for a single qualifying lap hence their improvement in qualifying recently where you can carry as much fuel as you need. When they get some raw power + better harvesting and good overall efficiency they'll be more competitive in race pace.

Watched the race last night but haven't really read the thread.

Ferrari going to SS seemed idiotic to me (not in hindsight, at the time)
Surely having to use the soft (retarded rule) why wouldn't you hedge your bets and use the soft? If it lasts great, if it doesn't, change to ultra at end.
Why force yourself into that scenario?

Rosberg vs Max
Got to say max did well, especially to entertain and force a good show. Many a driver would have given up. Equally disappointed by rosberg. I think many other divers would have got past in the merc . Hamilton and Vettel included in that

Overall
As always Canada is a great race

I said this before or maybe in another thread but I agree. I don't think rosberg is completely devoid of talent I think he's decent on 1 lap pace but his race craft is a good step below the likes of ham, vettel etc.

Rosbergs ability was greatly shown up as soon as radio info was banned.

The screw up at Barcelona and the hilarious pictures of his new wheel with a label for every button just screams out he has problems. This race with the , is there a problem, there are warnings, team telling him they are real.

Am I nuts or, did the slow puncture maybe sound like an excuse? He was clearly ignoring warnings, the team were clearly worried about it. As they can't actually say drive less badly to save your tires as it's coaching, instead they tell him he has a puncture to get him to pit onto new rubber presuming one of the warnings was high tire temps?

Either way the weird radio exchange where Rosberg is asking for confirmation of a warning or whatever it was exactly. I can't imagine that a lcd panel and a warning indicator then checking various temp read outs to see what is wrong and what needs managing is the hardest thing to understand.
