I have a Windows XP machine which was riddled with viruses and malware, the infection has been cleaned but now I cannot access the internet (on board ethernet)

The machine is setup with DHCP, an IP address has been allocated, it also has the correct gateway and DNS settings

Strangely I can still connect to a shared network drive and connect remotely through VNC

Connection through a USB ethernet adaptor works just fine

I've tried the Winsock XP fix with no success, anything else i can try?

Have you looked in control panel/internet options/advanced/LAN settings to see if it has set a proxy ? Should be on automatic.

Personally, I'd do a re-format and OS reinstall. The viruses and malware may have done quite a lot of damage.

Can you access a web page via the ip address?

e.g. http://185.103.4.11/index.php

If you can, but not by name your malware has done nasty things to your DNS resolution. This could be on your machine, or it could be your router is hacked (unlikely if other machines connected to the router still work normally).

You seem to be fairly knowledgeable about networking, which tells me you are PC savvy, which begs the question-- why the hell are you using XP? That OS has had no updates for TWO YEARS. Do you know how dangerous that is?

Get yourself a refurb win 7 key online for $ 45 USD and stop exposing yourself to threats like this. XP is EOL. No drivers, no nothing. Dead. Done.

If this works, then I would highly suggest checking the host file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc as well.
