Cannot for the life of me decide what CPU to get

Okay so I am changing my mind 2-3 times a day on this matter and it's driving me up the wall, if these things were in stock I would already own a 5900X by now but because they aren't I have too much time to think about the 'what if's' instead of just biting the bullet and buying one.

I primarily use my PC for gaming @ 1440p & some 4K, I currently own a 2700X/ RTX 3080 and I am wanting this CPU upgrade to last me 3-4 years, here are my gripes and quieries:

  • I have the money for a 5900X, but don't want to waste money on a CPU that I will probably never use to it's fullest potential (unless more new games start using multiple cores sometime soon)
  • My monitor is 1440p meaning I am more GPU bound than at 1080p, so the performance gains will be less significant for me, so is it still worth it to go for a CPU that is £260 more than the 5600X?
  • Will the 5600X age as well as the 5900X?
  • Do I just wait until the 5800X (probably) drops in price and go for that instead?
Please help me decide lol if I still gamed at 1080p I would 100% go for a 5900X but because I'm in the middle ground I'm not too sure how that will workout for me, I can't really find any benchmarks comparing the 56,58 and 5900X specifically @ 1440p by a trustworthy source as everyone is obviously focusing on 1080p when benchmarking CPU's.

Thanks

I'd just get this, it's available now

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Eight-Core Processor/CPU, without Cooler.
Sub total £439.99 inc
£445.98 inc with next day delivery

5800x

Love mine I don't regret the choice at all.

It's **** poor value for money though, but if you can get past that, it's a great CPU.

I don't even care about the value for money to be honest.

I would get a 5900x. The price difference between it and the 5800x pretty much pushes you in to a 5900x.

Not that the 5800x is a bad CPU, but it is priced a bit wrong. You don't have to stretch much further to get a CPU which is ultimately quite a lot better.

I went with 5900x for gaming + vr - seemed to a run bit cooler and better binned than the 5800x plus bit more value for money. But both cpus are good for gaming.

If you want to use it for 3/4 years I would go 5800x/ 5900x

Get the 5600X now, it'll be absolutely fine for the next few years gaming.

If you can wait, it sounds like 65W TDP non-X 8 core will be along in the spring, splitting the difference between the 5600X and 5800X.

If you are only planning to play games at 1440p how exactly is it quite a lot better?

Same TDP as the 5800x, but more cores a higher boost clock and double the L3 cache, for £100 more...no brainer.

Admittedly, I read it slightly wrong - in this instance, get the 5600x. The difference between all 3 playing games at 1440p is almost irrelevant in most circumstances.

Well, I can't see the 5900X in stock anywhere for 540 RRP so the 5800X for 446 with next day delivery is the best option... or wait X weeks/months for the 5900X

However 5800X has single CCX so lower latency. When games start requiring more than 8 cores at 4.7Ghz, ill buy a 5950X. That wont be for a few years I expect

Any instances where that lower latency translates to noticeable gains over additional cores and double the L3 cache though?

I think the 5800x is a great CPU, just not at that price point because its so damn close to the 5900x...

Probably Windows in general RE latency...and AIDA64 memory scores :p
I noticed the difference in clicking around the desktop going from 65ns to 55ns

Any instances where the additional cores and double L3 cache translates to noticable gains?

I myself went for the 5800x. I was in the same situation as you, it's hot though and as others have mentioned the 5900x seems to run cooler and has double the cache and is higher binned. Double cores for about a ton more. I decided to get the 5800x as it was £100 less to put that towards my 3080. I upgraded from a 3600. Resale of parts are stupidity high so that's a bonus, currently selling my 3600 and 5700xt on ze-bay and It would seem for a years use I'll be getting my money back if not more that what I paid for them.

The way AMD have priced the chips the 5600x is the best price/performance and the 5900x is priced just enough above the 5800x to make it finicially more appealing.

But then you do have to ask the question, will you use all those cores/threads on the 5900x?

What's the primary use of your PC?

How much is the budget?

I'm waiting for the 5800X to come down in price, or a 5700X (I'm starting to suspect the latter will be OEM only or just not exist at all).

Either way I'm not paying £400 for it tho :p

It's the best chip for my needs, but as said the current pricing is just lol-worthy. They clearly want to upsell to the 5900X and cash in on early adopters/people who absolutely need something right now.

Oh and if come March Rocket Lake is half decent, I will have no qualms raising my middle finger to AMD and going Intel again. As I suspect Intel's pricing will be a lot cheaper than AMDs. I consider AMD's 5000-series pricing to be a middle finger to all us consumers :p
