interesting camera
don't think it's competing with the 40D but it does up the ante in the entry level market against sony and nikon
We'll see what Nikon & Sony launch at PMA & of course we have yet to see results from any of them.
400D still continues & will go against the new Sony A200 & whatever Nikon will have as bottom of the range (D40X perhaps?).
450D will presumably go against the new Sony A300/A350 (or whatever it will be called) with (tiltable) live view & perhaps a new Nikon with live view.

Can you really see Nikon replacing the D40(X) or D80 this soon? I dunno, seems odd—although the 450D is most certainly going to steal people away from the D80, so it might be necessary.

D40 has been out longer than the D50, D40x almost as long and the D80 has been out longer than the D70 or D70s were.

I'd say we're due a D80s and a D30 at the very least.

I would say watch out for a D60 very soon.

and I am still holding out for a 5DII or the supprise launch of the 7D/3D (which I expect to all come out at once at the summer convention as it seems almost true that Canon will replace its entire line up of digital SLRs in 2008)

If they don't replace them all together I could easily envisage dropping the D40 with it's bottom of the range position then being taken by the D40X & introducing something above that.
Otherwise I think that they'll be the only company left selling a 6Mp DSLR ...

btw Sony's A300 & A350 are starting to break cover

A300 looks like an A200 with tilting live view screen & A350 looks like an A300 but with a larger (14.2Mp) sensor.
